Meet Kayla Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Miller.

Kayla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my small business when I was enrolled at the College of Visual Arts and Design at UNT in 2009. Working from home allowed for me to focus on raising my young son and finish my Drawing and Painting degree. After art school, I knew I wanted to become a healthcare professional (my other passion in life!) so I enrolled in the nursing program at Texas Woman’s University in 2015. I took a hiatus from my small business for a few years to complete my nursing degree.

In 2020 while working as a Registered Nurse, I felt stuck creatively. So, I reopened my shop with a fierce passion, focusing on creating magical jewelry, candles, and home craft pieces. I also began curating unique antique items for around the home.

Today, I still work as a Registered Nurse but have found the balance I’ve been searching for most of my adult life. I’m able to blend my numerable interests in a way that satisfies my need to create art and make a difference while working in healthcare.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My road has seen multiple bumps, roadblocks, and flashing warning signs! As a single parent, there’s always worry that you’re not doing it right. I’ve had to work multiple jobs while running my small business to pay the bills and give my son a comfortable life. At one point I was working three jobs while also going to school. That will take its toll on anyone, single parent or not. But I had a vision of what our life could look like, and that’s what gets you up in the morning to keep fighting for your dreams.

Running a small business has its own set of obstacles. It can feel like you work 24/7, not to mention trying to find time for yourself and your mental health. Setting those boundaries for yourself is so important. When I haven’t been able to take time for me, I feel completely drained and I feel like that gets reflected in your work. The passion to create dies a little, so it’s imperative to recharge yourself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Pale Muse is a place where you can find magical pieces for your life and home. I’m mostly known for creating jewelry using stones and vintage settings, but in 2020 I ventured out into the world of curating antique items and I love it! I’m a traditional artist at heart, so you can also find embroidery pieces, stickers, and prints of my paintings in my shop. I also offer pendulums, smudge sticks, altar bells, and a variety of crystals for your sacred space.

In 2020, I began creating ecofriendly soy candles adorned with crystals and herbs. I love merging practical wares with the metaphysical correspondences of herbs and stones. It has given me a way to express myself through my spiritual beliefs, and I think a lot of people can connect with that.

Candle making seemed so daunting two years ago, but after a lot of research and education, I’m very proud of the pieces I’m able to create. A lot of time and effort goes into each candle, from choosing the scent to pairing it with the appropriate embellishments or antique vessel. I just love the ritualistic process of making them, I really feel a connection to each piece.

How do you define success?
Success is being able to achieve your dreams without sacrificing your happiness, mental health, or the relationships with your loved ones.
