Meet Kevin and Brenita Jackson of KBJ Academy in Lewisville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin and Brenita Jackson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kevin and Brenita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started as college basketball coaches and within our first two years of running a program, changed the culture and had immediate success on the court, in the classroom and the community.

The school filed bankruptcy and shut down, we went on to make major impacts at other programs over the years and within this time, we began to talk about how can we offer what we did for all these programs to other programs and players. We started with just a blog and shared our ideas with other coaches and players. After some positive feedback and requests for more, we started KBJ Academy in 2014.

Our original services offered individual skills training for players and event hosting with our first coaches clinic which served as professional development to area coaches. We went from there to speaking at the Final Four in Tampa, Florida and professionally developing college coaches on our perspective of player development from a holistic approach – the student, the athlete and the person. This has been our belief since day one on coaching and our services have since expanded to team skills training sessions, team building retreats, empowerment conferences, motivational speaking and now a podcast called “Coffee with KBJ” which is the perfect blend where we discuss how to find success in sports, business and life. Our market has expanded and now we attract athletes, coaches, parents, business owners and everyday people looking to be motivated to win in life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road at all, but the challenges are what bring out the birth of new ideas and creative new ways to serve the needs we see. Some of the struggles we faced were people constantly telling us we could not work together as husband and wife but we believe that God created us to work together and gave us both strengths that benefit our business, each other, and everyone that works with us. Another struggle we faced was finding out the hard way who we can trust when it comes to doing business with others. We had to learn that some people are only “for you” when you are doing something for them. It’s tough having to make business decisions with people that don’t fulfill their end of the agreement especially if you respect them or were friends first.

Lastly, it took us a while to figure out what our true target market should be and how to supply their demand with a standard of excellence. Several people approach us with how to make a lot of money fast and how to make the most money from people with our experience and knowledge, but we believe that it’s not about pursuing the profit first.

We pursue our purpose and listen to God’s leading voice and he always provides our profit along the way.

KBJ Academy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
KBJ Academy is a business that first and foremost was given to us by God and for God’s glory.

Without him, we would not even be able to know how to run a successful business and he allows us to show the world that he has no limits. What we do is Empower people to win in life. This could be in sports through our skills training, camps or blogs. It also includes winning in business through our team building retreats and podcast. We also empower people to win spiritually by hosting conferences designed to offer encouragement, powerful speaking and opportunities to network with other like-minded people. Our conferences feature other small business owners and we create a comfortable environment of support for them to confidently promote their products/services. A portion of the proceeds from our conferences go to benefit other non-profit organizations and this past summer we awarded our first college scholarship to a graduating senior. We are most proud of the success stories that we hear back from others after we work with them. What sets us apart from others is that our business is focused on YOU winning!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We would have to say that our proudest moment so far has been the celebration of our 3 year anniversary of KBJ Academy this past August.

This dynamic duo has been on fire since day one of KBJ Academy. Even during their coaching career, they were dedicated, loyal and had a sincere passion for the girls. Brenita and Kevin Jackson always played to win but kept the girls well-being top priority.
So many times they were up against the odds but their Faith in God carried them through.Thank all those that have played a role in their lives to push them into purpose and destiny. I am so proud to be the mother of Kevin and mother-in-law of Brenita.
