Meet Kevin Thompson of Minimal Metal Art in Carrollton – North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Thompson.

Kevin Thompson is a self-taught artist who specializes in metal fabrication. A confident entrepreneur, toastmasters graduate, born-again Christian and a 2018 emerging artist who was born in Oceanside, California and currently residing in Carrollton, Texas.

Kevin has over 40 years working with metal in numerous facets from being a gearhead, self-taught machinist and a lifelong fascination with torches, welding and flame-colored metal. His first introduction to flame painted metal at the age of seven his father flame torched large nails added a file and together they marketed their own ‘nail file’. At the age of seven, he was selling door to door flame painted nail files.

His art speaks strongly about the Refiner’s Fire as he shares the wisdom gained through discipline as he points to the most brilliant spots of color on his art. The steel art wall sculptures come to live through hand grinding and flame painting. Keep in mind the highest temperatures on the metal art are indicated by the most brilliant blue colors. Blue represents wisdom, confidence, faith and truth.

It comes as no surprise he’ll share the colors remind him of his own life’s challenges past, present and future and the discipline learned through each. During 2016, he’ll reference it was his time in the wild as we lived in Richardson, Texas in our then 2800+ square foot home and in the fall of 2017, we attended the Dallas Tiny Houses Event. This kick-started Kevin and Marcie’s adventure toward becoming practicing Minimalists. Kevin at the same time had asked God for a new direction to compliment his love for interacting with people. They always say God is rarely early but he’s always on time, he brought to him Minimal Metal Art. Kevin hand signs each piece with an etched signature Roman 10:9.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” – NKJV

Each piece of art Kevin prays over and sends a blessing from his home to yours. It allows us to share our story to Be More with Less. His wife, Marcie Thompson is releasing their story in a book being released by their publisher in December. Abscission, Minimalist Memoirs a Practical Guide to See through your Stuff and Clear Your Heart. Minimal Metal Art found its way to him in perfect orchestration and by no coincidence. Over the last year, we’ve been invited to participate in thirty shows across the DFW Metroplex and we invite you to take in the 3D brilliance of Minimal Metal Art.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Kevin had asked for a new direction during 2016-2017. It was a long dry spell of business trials from an online app business venture, shea butter production and a candle business he’d given to an ex-spouse that had done incredible. So, as the thoughts go if he did it once he can do it again? Together, Kevin and Marcie made a run at Candllure Soy Scented Candles. After a year of pushing through numerous large gift shows from America’s Mart in Atlanta, GA and others. A decision had to be made so we released this dream.

As an entrepreneur, you learn to dig in, challenge yourself and if need be fail faster. Approaching sixty years old he asked God to direct his feet to the ‘one’. Not just the one that would make him a bit more money, but the business that could offer more. More freedom, more time to speak with people and more meaning to share. After continued prayer and reflection on three words wisdom, clarity and refinement it comes as no surprise you’re lead to understand the discipline in every moment of life. The discipline he received in his life and perfect orchestration by God brought about the fruition of Minimal Metal Art. Together, he and his wife would have sold their super-sized house and moved into a smaller abode in Carrollton. This allowed the extra time to reflect on minimalizing, space to focus, and freedom to play with other past times. The past time playing with a grinder and flame has now become his passion shared through Minimal Metal Art inviting others to #FindYourFire.

Minimal Metal Art – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Minimal Metal Art is a uniquely hand ground and flame painted wall art sculpture made from steel. Each unique piece of art shares a grind pattern. Each grind pattern is pulled into a collection that speaks to people in their moment in life from Guard Your Heart, Contemporary Elegance, Endless Circles, Spheres, Infinite and our newly launched HOUSE OF KOLOR KANDY PAINT collection, Broken Colors. The thing we are most proud of as a working gallery is the ability to share with others not just the art but the message behind the art. Minimal Metal Art will hang in your home not only as a blessing shared with you, a conversation piece or an investment in art, but the essence is also the message behind the art. Fire as we all know is referenced in the bible and on Kevin’s journey with the art while reading he and Marcie would notice fire is referenced in two ways as a practical thing (usually pretty obvious) or a divine thing. If it’s divine, then figure out if it refers to God’s presence, punishment, or purification. So, as you gaze at the 3D holographic grinding what does it remind you of God’s presence in your life, punishment you’ve faced through discipline or simply clarification purifying a few thoughts to clear out space in your own mind? We pray the art hangs in our new friend’s homes to remind them of their deepest darkest challenges and how they’ve prevailed.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
As an emerging artist, it is challenging to get the word out. Kevin’s proudest moment thus far has been overwhelmingly the compliments and support over the last year with over 30,000 folks who have visited one or more of his social media platforms via Instagram and Facebook. The invitations to participate in juried art shows during his first full year on the scene and feedback from jurors along the way.  Attending the art shows with amazing artists who have blazed the way and shared their trials n tribulations for us to learn. Kevin would like to give thanks to those artists he’s met during 2019 as so many in the art industry have learned to find their own passion, share their message and for him as a practicing minimalist he’ll remind you to read more about their story behind the art with their upcoming book being released December 2019, “Abscission: Master the Ordinary: Live the Extraordinary A Practical Guide to Clear Your Heart and See Through Your Stuff”.

Awesome work from a great artist and support from his wife. Seems every week they are expanding the art they sell and this will continue to grow because of these two great people.

That is great looking metal work. Some of the pieces appear three dimensional.
