Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiandra Jeané.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kiandra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for the Arts. I remember my first writing club in elementary school that pushed my written craft early on and the plethora of showcases and competitions I participated in with my dance companies. My dance teachers played such a pivotal role because they taught me the ins and outs of artistry.
My childlike loves evolved into a lifelong passion for educating inner-city youth through these same creative outlets. The Arts give us opportunities to tell stories, create change, and bring impact to the world around us. Feeling so connected to this, I created my brand, The KiWord! Outside of my written love, I also am a teacher by day and model/performing artist by night!
Has it been a smooth road?
Believe me when I tell you, adversity has been real from businesses already having “my look” on their roster to lack of resources. I still have moments of struggle, simply being a Black woman. But being transparent, one of my biggest hindrances was my own self-doubt. I was so attached to everyone else’s definition of success. I wasn’t taking risks. I was more comfortable playing it safe. Once I started to create my version of success, things changed. No, the opportunities didn’t heighten, rather ignited my resilience to press forward and keep trying against all the odds. I learned to advocate for myself and ask questions. This thinking consequently opened more doors just because I used my voice and trusted the plan already prepared for me. I’ve been blessed to have a supportive mom and family that has been there along the way.
We’d love to hear more about The KiWord.
My biggest creative project thus far has been my brand, The KiWord. The KiWord is committed to crafting an original multi-media lifestyle and personal development content. From topics of self-care to relationship tips, I created this with the hope to empower my audience and give them the tools needed to create the life they envision- without limitations.
My biggest accomplishment to date with the KiWord is my segment, Bomb.COM. As a lover and advocate of all-things-creative, this monthly segment is dedicated to fellow African-American movers and shakers in their respective creative realms. C.O.M is an acronym for Creative of the Month. Highlighting Black creatives and giving them a platform to tell their stories is something I felt was lacking in our community. Hearing their stories and artistry has been the epitome of Black Excellence for me. Come to think of it, creating The KiWord was an accomplishment in itself. I was previously a staff writer for a published e-magazine and they ultimately wanted to use my voice in different ways than I envisioned! That leap of faith was nerve-racking but oh so worth it.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Being in Dallas, my creativity has definitely increased. There’s something here for everyone and the Arts culture here has quite a presence. I have been able to not only pursue my writing, but my modeling career has also been a great experience living here. For someone just starting out, I would say simply be you. No matter the location, your story is worth telling, so believe that you bring something to the table! You have to make it work for you.
