Meet Kimberly Wylie of Kimberly Wylie Photography in Mockingbird Station Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Wylie.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kimberly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
One day while at my job in the finance industry, a colleague asked me the following question which changed my life forever, and “If money were not a factor, what would you do for work?” I answered, “a photographer”. Looking back on this moment, it is really strange because up to that point, I had not ever taken a class or even owned a camera. I just thought it would be fun to be able to stop time and catch all the spontaneous moments I saw as frozen pictures in my mind. That following Christmas, my grandma gave me enough money to buy a nice starter DSLR camera and my life took a major turn. I fell in love and was obsessed with learning everything I could about photography. At first, I thought I would be a landscape photographer but after visiting a baby store in California, I knew I was meant to photograph children. Around this time, my husband got a bonus and took me to dinner. He gave me a present of some photography books and inside the card was his bonus check. The card read, “Quit your job, you have a dream and a gift. I support you 100%.” To say the least, I cried a lot of happy tears. Quitting a very well paid job to follow a dream was a big leap and one that I am so grateful I took.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Wow. This is a real question. Yes, I had a lot of struggles. Initially, I quit my finance job thinking that I would have a lot more balance in my schedule since I was in control. What I failed to factor into this equation is that I am an all-out kinda girl. I threw myself so far into my new job that I started to get out of balance in the more important areas of my life. Additionally, it grew a lot faster than I would have ever imagined and as a result, I was working just as many hours as my finance job. After some deep soul searching, a shifting of priorities and creating an identity that didn’t rely on work to define me, my business partner/best friend and I made a major change in our business. We cut over half our business over night and decided to specialize in the part of photography that made us most excited… gorgeous and dynamic wall art displays.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I think the thing that makes working with Kimberly Wylie Photography the most special is that once you come to us you are part of our family. We take what we do seriously and love our families so much that we will do anything to make their images and experience as stress-free and fun as possible. We are known for caring about our clients as people and as friends. As for the more tangible part of our business, we are known for being a boutique photography studio that specializes in creating stunning wall-art displays for your home. Our goal is to have you sipping coffee in the morning, analyzing your children’s most adorable features on your wall which will help you start your day off with a smile.

I think the pride we take in getting it right, making sure we capture the twinkle behind the smile, offering fresh and current yet timeless and classic products as well as designing show-stopping holiday cards is what keeps our clients coming back year after year. Their traditions become ours and we find this to be the greatest honor in our work. That and of course, watching all “our” kids grow. 🙂

What were you like growing up?
This is a very interesting question because I have been reflecting a lot on this already this week. I think when you come across certain situations or problems when raising your own kids, you naturally reflect back on your own childhood. I was a tom-boy. I love makeup and girly things but the heart of me is a tom-boy and you will see me often in jeans and a t-shirt. In fact, my collection of t-shirts is quite impressive. As a child, I was very active in swimming and gymnastics and I was a happy kid. I can be insightful and I remember my mom telling me at an early age, this was a gift I inherited from my Japanese Grandpa. This trait actually comes into play every time I am photographing different personalities and is super useful. My personality now is very similar and is typically a happy one. It is also one that can be very intense when it comes to getting something done. I like to be productive and to see progress and results. I love to be creative and recently have started painting as well as doing my photography. I love to run, hike, read and listen to music. Singing in my car is a definite favorite.
