Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Hopper.
Kristi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I worked my way up in a Fortune 100 company and spent ten successful years in management when I became pregnant with my daughter and was laid off during a corporate restructure. I began interviewing elsewhere, knowing my expertise and personal skills would be a strong asset; however, each interview ended when prospective employers learned of my pregnancy. It was clear to me I had to reinvent myself.
With a degree in merchandising from the University of North Texas, I asked myself what thrilled my heart. I found the answer under my own roof: interior design. Twenty years ago, I started Kristi Hopper Designs, a full-service interior design firm. I’ve heard it said that our purpose is found at the intersection of our passion and talent; it’s certainly where I found mine.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have overcome many challenges as a female entrepreneur. Initially, one of the biggest challenges I faced was learning how to run a business. I learned that passion cannot outweigh profitability—otherwise, I would be a successful hobbyist or volunteer. I learned to charge what I am worth. It was uncomfortable initially, but it was one of the most important things I had to learn to do in order to be successful.
I also had to learn to let go. Outsourcing operations was difficult for me. It’s hard to let go of something so deeply personal, as the creator and CEO. I learned to identify my limitations and work to my strengths. I hired a bookkeeper and an administrative staff. I learned to work diligently, tirelessly—but also, to let go and be present in my life and for my family. Learning to balance a family and a successful career is no small feat, but a worthwhile endeavor. I have two grown children, who are extraordinary; and I am celebrating my 20th year as founder and principal of Kristi Hopper Designs.
