Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Flynn.
Kristin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved taking photos. Even as a child, I would make my little sister dress up in my dance costumes and let me take pictures of her around the house. My true love of photography started in high school when I started taking a photojournalism class. That’s when I got my first SLR, which originally belonged to my grandfather. Fast forward a few years to my first son being born, I purchased my first DSLR to capture the special memories of my growing family. With several years under my belt, and with a lot of practice, classes, and workshops; I feel I’ve developed my own style and viewpoint. My main focus is now capturing the love and joy of families and little ones.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth having in life is a completely smooth road. As I am sure it is for most families, my biggest obstacle was finding balance. Going from being a stay at home mom to a work at home mom was a bigger change than any of us expected. Luckily, I am fortunate enough to have a supportive husband to help pick up some of the slack and some awesome kids that help out by letting me work when I need; even though it usually means a Nerf dart flying by my face occasionally.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am primarily a family, maternity and child photographer; but I do sprinkle in some high school seniors and couples as well. I have recently started moving towards a more candid/portrait hybrid. While I always get the posed, smiling shot, I truly love to capture the connections and special moments we all really want to remember. I encourage the families to play games and tell secrets to get a genuine reaction between them. For the little ones, my love is in the details. The dimples in the kiddos smile, chubby toddler legs that seem to disappear overnight, or a gap from a recently lost tooth.
There is nothing I love more than having the honor of providing a little documentation of special moments in a family’s journey that they can cherish forever.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
About two years ago, I completed my first 365 project that required me to take a took a photo each day and post it online. It started out as a way to document the everyday lives of my family, which it absolutely did, but it also helped me grow my client work in an unexpected way. This is when I started focusing on a little more lifestyle into my sessions and finding ways to draw a real connection. The completion of that project helped me grow in so many ways as a photographer. I actually just started a second 365 project for 2019, and I’m looking forward to the changes that the year brings this time.
