Meet Krystal Brown of Lovers Lane Birth Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Brown.

Krystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am from Dallas, Tx born and raised. I am a first-generation college student chasing a dream. I started both my nursing and midwifery career at Parkland hospital before leaving and expanding my craft. I have my Bachelors in Science and Nursing from Stephen F. Austin State University and my Masters in Science and Nursing, specializing in Midwifery from Texas Tech Health Science Center. I have worked travel and contract nursing on many Labor and Delivery units locally and in different states before returning home to Dallas. I met Dinah at Lovers Lane Birth Center (LLBC) when I was a student in 2016. She and her clients changed my life. It was sitting in this birth center when I realized what it meant to be a Midwife. I welcome a variety of private insurance plans, Medicaid, and affordable cash pay options for moms who are interested in birthing with us. At LLBC we understand the high maternal and infant mortality rates are shocking, especially for women of color, and we are working diligently to improve those statistics for our moms. I truly love our mamas! It’s this love that drives my passion to provide quality, inclusive, and safe care to all of my mamas.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been far from a smooth road! I went from being an employee one day to manager and owner of a busy functioning birth center the next day. It was a lot to manage and understand. I am blessed with an understanding staff, a talented husband, and friends to help me make this transition as smooth as possible. I am proud to say that we have finished the year better than we started.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lovers Lane Birth Center?
Lovers Lane Birth Center was established over 20 years ago with Dinah Waranch as the owner. As of January 1, 2021, I purchased it from her to be the only black-owned birth center in DFW and the second black-owned birth center in Texas. At LLBC our moms have the option to give birth at home or at the birth center. Here we allow each mother to learn themselves and trust their body as it grows and develops their baby. We want each mom to feel empowered in each prenatal appointment and during their birth and postpartum period. At LLBC we welcome multiple forms of insurance, including Medicaid. My single most proud moment as owner is the overflow of love and well wishes that I have received from the birth workers, and the community. That feeling is priceless.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think that risk-taking is necessary in order to grow. Sometimes you have to make yourself uncomfortable and do hard things. I wasn’t sure how I was going to be an owner, full time midwife, new mother of two, and wife successfully but I wasn’t going to allow that uncertainty hinder me. I had many factors going against me moving forward with the purchase. I decided to trust and invest in myself to follow my dream. I am continuously evolving and seeking counsel to help make me a better person and owner.
