Today we’d like to introduce you to LaQuintta Miller.
Hi LaQuintta, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Growing up I always knew that I wanted to be in the medical field. I wanted to help people, but I didn’t know exactly what that looked like. After graduating high school, I started off in college to become a nurse. After discovering that nursing school what not for me I stopped and pursued a career in dental. I worked in the dental field for about 5 years on and off. When I became a mother in 2017 my view on life completely changed. When I was 7 months pregnant with my first, I was fired from my job. That was the very first time I seen someone treat a woman differently because she was pregnant. My eyes slowly started to open to a world that I was unfamiliar with. After I had my first, I decided to become a stay-at-home mom. I absolutely loved it, and it allowed me to grow a lot in many different areas of life. Fast forward to 2020 when the pandemic hit, and I also found out I was pregnant with my second. I would tell friends and family all the time that I wanted to become a doula, but it wasn’t until my second pregnancy that it really hit me. My second pregnancy was very different from my first. My husband wasn’t allowed with me in my appointments, I had to wear a mask, temperature checks and so much more. When I was a few days shy of 37 weeks, I went for a checkup and found out that I had preeclampsia. No one had ever educated me on this, the warning signs, what’s at risk or anything. All I knew was my blood pressure was extremely high and I was sent directly to the hospital. Where they later told me that I needed to give birth to my daughter in the next 24 hours. I was scared, I was confused, I wished someone had taught me about this so I knew more. Thankfully the next day I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, and everything went great! It was in that very moment that I officially decided I was going to be a doula and that no women should have to go through what I went through! That I was going to make a difference by educating and supporting women through pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. I decided to officially follow my dreams in becoming a childbirth educator and birth doula.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every successful person will tell you in order to reach your goals it’s going to take some sacrifices, sleepless nights, and most importantly a great support system. Many times throughout this process I would have to fight my own thoughts. Can I actually do this? Is this for me? What if I’m not good enough? Each time I had to shut them down and tell myself the opposite. I can do this! This is for me! I am enough! My biggest battle throughout this journey has been my mind. Of course, family will support you and encourage you but if you don’t believe in yourself, everyone else is wasting their time. I constantly had to remind myself that this is what I was meant to be doing and to not give up when things got tough.
We’ve been impressed with Precious Moments Doula, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a Birth Doula, I provide a plethora of services to my clients and their families. I build trustworthy relationships with them as I support and educate them through their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. There’s no limit to the support that I give. From helping a first-time mom make a birth registry to supporting a mother give a unmedicated birth in her home. I support all births including vaginal, unmedicated, medicated, and cesarean. I also support all birth locations including hospital, home, and birth centers. I build birth plans with my clients and do everything I can to help them have the birth that they truly desire. As a childbirth educator, I educate women and their families on pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum, newborn care, breastfeeding and so much more. I teach some of this as a doula but this year I will be releasing my own actual courses for anyone to take that wants to learn more! My courses are not going to be like your typical courses and that’s because I am truly taking my time I am a mother who remembers all the things that no one told me about pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum and my courses are going to include it all!
As a placenta encapsulation specialist, after you give birth to your precious baby, I retrieved your placenta and safely encapsulate it for you. Within 48 hours, I return it to you in pill form for you to digest for at least 2 weeks. The benefits of placenta encapsulation are endless! It helps with milk production, lowers your chances of postpartum depression, hormonal balances and so much more!
Something that sets me apart from other doulas is that this is more than just a business or career for me. This is a true passion! I find great joy in being just a small piece of someone’s beautiful moments. Helping woman reach goals that they never thought they could. Watching women go from scared to confident. It’s a true joy! That very moment that I see a mom see her baby for the very first time melts my heart every single time! This will never get old to me, it’s truly what I was meant to be.
Something that I want readers to know about my brand is that it’s an honest one. I give each and every one of my clients the best version of me every single time. I listen to their hearts and always try my best to suit any and all of their needs. I offer custom payment plans and I also support low-income families in numerous ways. I do this because I believe that every mother deserves a doula.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you are a doula just starting out or thinking about becoming one, I always say do your research. Being a doula is not easy, there are some difficult times, and it takes a strong person to be able to help others in some of their most vulnerable moments. This career takes a true heart and a true passion. You have to love people no matter what and be there for them when they need you. Sometimes that means missing out on family time or canceling a vacation because you never know when a baby may come. It takes time but every second is so worth it! I wouldn’t change a thing!
