Today we’d like to introduce you to Latorra Garland.
Latorra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Culinary Artist and Head Chef at PieFace Desserts and, Catering. I decided to open a catering business because “I found joy in preparing meals for others and seeing their smiles from enjoying a meal I prepared.” I was born in Greenwood, MS and raised in Memphis, TN. My Culinary specialties include Soul food and southern desserts.
My passion for “Soul food” and southern desserts was ignited as a young girl growing up in the small town of Greenwood, Mississippi.
My earliest experience came with spending time in the kitchen, watching my father, Oscar prepare meals for their family of nine. As a teenager, I began cooking meals on my own. With inspiration from my mother and grandmothers’ southern kitchens, where I mastered the art of Southern desserts, that I still use and treasures their recipes. Some of their recipes are found in, “Mamas Banana Pudding,” a southern desserts cookbook that I wrote!!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth ride!! The journey has been very challenging but rewarding!! Moving to a new city and trying to build clientele has been my biggest challenge. Getting people to trust that I know my way around the kitchen and produce delicious quality foods at all times.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My childhood memories include growing up watching my grandmother cook three meals per day. Picking vegetables from her garden to cook for that day. Picking berries off the side of the road in the country for my grandmother to make wine.
My memories also include watching my grandmother make the best pound cakes ever and my mom standing over the stove to stir the custard for the banana pudding for several minutes to make sure it does not burn.
