Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Levitan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Laura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a child, I loved to take pictures of everything. I could burn through a roll of film more quickly than any of my sisters. My parents are musicians and they introduced us to a world of art. Art in the form of music, paintings, sculpture, and photography. As I grew older, I was drawn down a more practical path. I went to school and became a speech-language pathologist. A practical profession with job security. But as I became a mother I was tempted to photograph everything again. Over the past ten years, my passion for photography has evolved into fine art custom photography. I’ve developed an interest in all things related to photography including the art of the printed medium.
Now, I not only concentrate on the action of creating an image, processing it and delivering it to my clients – I also provide the service of custom artwork for the home. I begin every session with the concept of where we will display this artwork. Where will this piece of commissioned art hang in your home?
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with the creation of any business, there have been some ups and downs. It turns out that when you start a business you don’t just get to concentrate on the thing you love. You also have to learn about marketing, networking, website design, and the list goes on. In the process of learning all of these things, I’ve found that I actually enjoy them and they enrich the experience for me as a business owner.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in maternity and newborn photography. I also work with many other genres including families and occasionally weddings. But I absolutely adore babies and the special opportunity to make a woman feel like a queen when she is growing a new life inside her. My favorite style of photography is whimsical with lots of textures and rich colors. I have a studio wardrobe of over 80 dresses from maternity, down to toddlers, and young women. My studio is full of gorgeous props, backdrops, wraps and blankets to design the perfect session for each client. I love to work with my clients to design their session around their current decor so that their commissioned artwork will blend seamlessly with their furnishings. I offer a curated selection of gorgeous products. Everything is archival and will last 100 years or more, something for your children to inherit. My albums and portrait boxes are imported from Italy and are truly something you have to see to believe. More than capturing an image I want to create a work of art featuring my clients that they can treasure in their home and pass down to their children and grandchildren.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I had a variety of interests. I read copiously, a lot of biographies of historical figures. I loved music, theater, singing and dance. But the thing I enjoyed the most was figure skating. I was a competitive figure skater for years. My parents allowed me to pursue just about any interest that I had.
