Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura McKissack.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Laura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Real estate has always been intriguing to me. After graduating from The University of Kansas I worked as an estate manager for 5 years. That experience led to my love of design, architecture, and real estate. While working as an estate manager my hobby of searching for different estate sales and scouting out vintage goods allowed me entrance into many homes and my love for real estate continued to blossom. In 2015, my husband and I welcomed a precious little boy and I decided to stay home with him full time. During that time I continued to frequent estate sales and my interest in real estate grew even more. My husband works in commercial real estate and a great friend of mine works in residential real estate. They both kept telling me how I should stop thinking about getting my license and just do it, so I did.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This is a fun question. My real estate journey has been far from smooth but that’s what makes this industry exciting, interesting and extremely challenging at times. I believe the biggest hurdle when starting out in real estate is putting yourself out there and becoming comfortable with the market, which is not always easy. Buying a home is the biggest investment for most people and selling can be a very daunting task. I want to make this process go as smooth as possible. Does that always happen? No, but I have learned that working hard with the agent on the other side of the transaction can drastically impact the outcome of this process. Every transaction is different, some are “less bumpy” than others.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have to give credit to my husband. He has been my number one cheerleader, and is constantly pushing me to step out of my comfort zone. Also, for all the working moms out there, I applaud you. Balancing work-life and mom-life has been the most challenging part for me. Everyday is different in real estate and that is what makes this such a perfect fit for me and my family. The Vetterick-Monkhouse Group has helped me navigate this ever changing industry. Joanne Vetterick and Mary Monkhouse have been amazing mentors and are constantly answering my questions. Another member of our group, Rebecca Wong, helped me write my very first contract. My first clients trusted in me and I will never forget that.
