Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Petka.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve had a passion for art since a young age and an underlying yearning to be an artist. My dream didn’t come to face until this past year when my husband encouraged me to paint after an eight-year hiatus. Before picking up a paintbrush again, I had a career as a Director at a contemporary art gallery in Dallas.
Last year, life took me in a new direction and we decided it was best for me to stay home with our children to help accommodate the busy travel schedule of our family. Being a mom means everything in the world to me but I had a creative itch that kept calling me to paint. Once I sat in front of a blank canvas with a collection full of colors, I knew I was on the path God choose for me.
Please tell us about your art.
I crave texture in my pieces with bursts of color that are surrounded by the peacefulness of whites. Creating abstract, original works with acrylic and oil paints, I am inspired by the harmonies of life, playfulness of children and serenity solitude can bring. It gives me pure elation when someone falls in love with a piece of art that they will look at every day and motivates me to continue creating.
After being in the gallery world for many years, I found a void for affordable, original work and wanted to fill that void with large-scale works families can bring into their homes. Art can change the character of a room and bring so much joy into life. I strive to make accessible works that are inviting, interesting and inspirational when viewed.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Taking the first steps and committing to a career as an artist is very daunting. You face criticism, skepticism and physical challenges such as finding space large enough to create works. As a new artist, it can be tough to navigate how to engage viewers, find art patrons to support your work and new outlets for it to be viewed through. I think the first step in attaining an audience for an artist’s work and finding a platform where people can go see your work can be the hardest obstacles to overcome.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
