Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Taylor.
Hi Lauren, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist with a passion for giving children the ability to use their speech and language skills effectively at home and in the community. I believe that speech and language therapy is most effective when it is fun, uplifting, and motivating for each child. I work to provide each patient with an individualized research-based driven treatment plan; with cues, strategies, and activities specific to the responses of the child and their interests. I will coordinate and advocate with and for your child. The plan of care will reflect the overall family needs as well, so carryover will be effective and efficient. The goal is to provide the patient and caregivers with the tools to be successful and motivate them to use them independently at home. I received my master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Texas Woman’s University in 2011. I am fluent in American Sign Language and have experience with Augmentative Communication Devices. I am a Certified Autism Specialist, Certified with Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, and Certified with The Listening Program. For the past 10 years, I have gained vast experience working with capable, dedicated, and brilliant coworkers and professionals in home health at Therapy 2000 and Children’s Health Hospital. The patient’s I treat range from 3 months of age to 15 years of age with needs from Articulation deficits, Language Disorders, and Delays to Genetic Abnormalities and Syndromes to Feeding Disorders.
I am an individual who genuinely LOVES what I do. I enjoy working with all children and feel blessed to be able to be a way of positive change for each child.
I have three beautiful daughters, seven-year-old Olivia, four-year-old Adeline, and two-year-old Emma. I have a supportive and loving husband, Eric. Outside of working, we are enjoying the life we have built together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Excellent question! When you are beginning your career and building a family it is natural to have ideas and a plan for success. The actual execution is a bit more complicated. I would say the biggest struggle has been time management. Juggling a family and a growing business is wonderful and tiring! I am constantly learning and implementing improved processes or ideas into functional aspects of my business. There is always room for improvement. The most important thing to remember is to keep moving forward and give it your all. A setback or failure is an opportunity to try again.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Taylor’ed SLP?
Taylor’ed SLP is pediatric speech, language, and feeding therapy. If a child can’t communicate it’s a problem – by the time parents realize it’s a problem … it’s a pattern. My private practice allows me to treat children properly by making a positive & measurable change. There are several things about Taylor’ed SLP that is different from other clinics. First off, from start to finish I am the point person for all contact! Parents are not contacting different people for scheduling, billing, or therapy. This creates a fluent program for parents to follow and successful communication from the get-go.
At other facilities, parents are asked to wait in a waiting room, leaving the therapist alone with the child while therapy is provided. This leaves the parent clueless on how to identify current behavior/ patterns, why it is not optimal, and how to fix it. The parents are not able to observe the change in each trial. At Taylor’ed SLP parents are educated and empowered to be a way of change for their child. I encourage parents to sit in on the sessions. I then use a think-aloud strategy to tell them exactly what I am seeing and how to change the behavior or pattern. Once the child achieves a routine of responding appropriately to the activity it is handed off to the parent so I can observe and establish the same success between parent and child.
In other programs the homework assigned may be lost in how completion of those activities will functionally, long term be beneficial to the child.
At Taylor’ed SLP the home programs are provided to the parents along with materials and instructions on how to generalize success to all settings. The ultimate goal is not for the child to improve only in the therapy room with the clinician but to be able to successfully communicate or achieve independence at home and in the community.
Lastly, at other facilities coordinating or communicating with your personal therapist is usually not possible throughout the week.
I am open to coordinating and communicating with parents throughout the week at no additional charge. It is important for families to let me know if they were able to achieve success at home with the home program assigned. If they are not successful then I need to know (via video, email, text, phone call) what that failure looked like so we can troubleshoot and move forward.
Speech, Language, and feeding therapy provides children with the ability to express their wants, thoughts, and needs to everyone. It gives them the tools to explore food in a healthy way so they are able to maintain and gain weight needed for growth and development across the lifespan! Do you want to set your child up for success at the table, at school, in life? Call Taylor’ed SLP today for change tomorrow!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Of course! Since Covid-19 shutdown our country in 2020 we have learned the importance of support and community that families need when navigating the journey of parenting. Taylor’ed SLP opened a Teletherapy option. Teletherapy is the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language, & feeding skills over mobile devices such as a computer. All of the paperwork and materials are emailed to you. Ongoing treatment sessions will take place during a video conference call and in these therapy sessions, the parent is present along with the child. Teletherapy is as effective as in-person therapy and acts as a window into the home. This form of therapy wasn’t available with Taylor’ed SLP prior to Covid. It is a blessing for many families.
