Today we’d like to introduce you to LeTeshia Wilson.
LeTeshia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I would first like to say thank you to Kristen and the Voyage Dallas team for this amazing opportunity. I am extremely grateful to be apart of something as amazing as Voyage Dallas. Thank you! As I think back to where my entrepreneurship journey began, the place that I can pinpoint it all to is my upbringing, growing up with five siblings and growing up in the church. I was born and raised in a small town by the name of Mexia, TX.
Watching how hard my mother, CaSandra Chambers Alexander worked to overcome adversity, finish school, and raise all of us really instilled in me the values and importance of hard work, determination and staying rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ. My faith-based principles are what set the tone for everything that I have accomplished today. Growing up in the church where we were constantly serving others, the community and each other, I believe, is what lit the fire for my passion and a true desire for helping others.
Lets fast forward a bit. 2012 was one of the roughest years of my life. I attended Ogle Beauty School in Denton, TX and I was super excited to embark on this journey. I was fresh out of high school so being on my own away from my small-town hometown for the first time ever was like being in Hollywood for me. I began to neglect my responsibilities and they soon began to catch up with me. I could no longer afford to pay for my schooling, so I had to drop out. Mismanaging money had me evicted from apartments and sleeping on friend’s couches. Not taking school seriously caused me to fail my state-board exam. I was then forced to move back in with my mom for a bit to save up so I could finish what I started. Throughout the time I was back home my mother always kept me encouraged; in fact when I moved in, she told me not to even unpack my stuff because I wasn’t going to be there for long. She knew that my situation was not my final destination so she made sure that I didn’t get comfortable in that season I was in.
In August 2013, I was able to move back to Denton, TX and graduated from beauty school and become a licensed cosmetologist. After a few years in management in the beauty industry, I began my pursuit of entrepreneurship. I knew nothing about owning a business or let alone how to start one but there was this burning desire inside me to create something, so I did. With no direction, mentor, or even a book to guide me I created and launched my very first business in 2018-2019 and it was one of the best but also the scariest decisions of my life.
I began investing in myself, doing more and more research into entrepreneurship and networking. This is where I noticed there was a gap in the market for actual TEACHERS and people who were willing to actually help others get there too. People who have experienced the hardships of entrepreneurship to help transition new business owners along their journey. I remember how I felt when I first launched. I had no sales experience, I was a “nobody” online and I had little support. It was a lonely and defeating feeling. I began to try to “Follow the crowd” and do what I saw other businesses doing and that’s when reality really set in. I realized that there was no “one size fits all” strategy in entrepreneurship. If I wanted to be successful and really birth the vision God had placed inside me I was going to have to really do the work so that it would manifest into reality.
People say that you have to become the person that you needed when you were younger, but for me I had to became who and what I needed when I first launched my business. Ultimately that experience played a pivotal role in what transitioned me from the retail part of entrepreneurship to being a service-based business owner.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. My first couple hours in business I was able to make back my ROI x2, which was nuts but I didn’t know how to maintain or sustain it, which led to burnout. I felt like a failure and a fraud. There were many days where I wanted to quit as well as there being many sleepless nights wondering if I was on the right track or not. I had to learn the hard way that it is ok to ask for help. I struggled quite a bit when launching my business but what kept me going is remembering that this business is bigger than me and what’s coming is so much greater than anything I could be going through. Once I realized that God had already placed everything I needed to be successful INSIDE ME my MESS became my MESSAGE and my TESTS became my TESTIMONY it changed the narrative and shifted me from waiting on it to walking in it.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a Social Media Strategist and business coach for small business owners and new entrepreneurs. I teach businesses who are stuck or have hit a plateau on how to maximize their digital footprint and stand out online through marketing and branding. I help my clients refine their brand by creating a clear and defined offer so they can attract clients/customers on autopilot and reach their desired audience without having to LIVE on social media.
What I specialize in is branding and marketing. What I have noticed is that many businesses have great products, services and ideas but they are not properly positioned where they are bringing in consistent sales or customers. In this digital age where having a business is the norm, I help businesses repackage their offer and really finetune their brand so their business can speak for itself because Let’s be honest, nobody wants to trade in their 9-5 just to work for themselves 24hrs a day, every day.
Seeing my clients win is what true fulfillment is to me. What is different about my service-based business is that none of my clients or future clients are a number to me everything is individualized. We map out a strategic plan and a roadmap to ensure amazing results along with pinpointing the areas in which they need improving. Working with me is the definition of “One Band, One Sound” because we are in this together. I provide accountability and clarity every single step of the way. Working with me you will never have to feel stuck or alone like I did when I started.
My future plans involve continuing to work with new entrepreneurs and small business owners on expanding their brand and refinement.
Aside from my coaching clients I am currently working alongside my mother Casandra Chambers Alexander of Invitation Outreach a non-profit located in Dallas Texas to provide meals, toiletries and much more to the community and surrounding areas of Dallas.
We aspire for Invitation Outreach to be a symbol of hope for people without conventional housing such as living on the streets &/or squatting. We are working towards Invitation Outreach being a liaison with community partners through collaboration. We ultimately just want to be a light to our community, bringing people from all walks of life together to stand in the gap and provide hope to all.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me, is believing you can do something and actually doing it. It does not matter what the world’s definition of success is as long as you kept your word to yourself and God; that is all that matters. When I look back at the things that I have accomplished, the main thing that sticks out to me is my perseverance. No matter what the situations looked like, I always prevailed because the thing that was pushing me to keep going is my faith. The only way to be unsuccessful in my eyes is by giving up, this thing called life comes with a fight and the minute you quit is the minute you lose.
