Meet Lexi Wesley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Wesley.

Lexi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

Growing up I was a little shy, but once warmed up I would talk a lot to anyone I met. I even mentioned to my family that maybe one day I’d have my own television show, due to my talkative nature. I also spent a lot of time writing as that has always seem to be a form of therapy for me, when I couldn’t find the words to say aloud then I would simply write how I was feeling down. English, was also one of my best subjects while in school. As I grew older, my love for writing and speaking grew. I knew early on, when it was time for me to get a degree from THE Texas Tech University, I would major in Journalism following in the footsteps of my dad. My love for all things entertainment, radio, and sports grew over the years so I knew that this career field would be the perfect fit for me.

While attending Texas Tech, like any other college student, I had to overcome a lot of adversity as I embarked on this new chapter of life. I’m known for my bubbly personality, my infectious laugh, and a big smile. Those three things seemed to make people believe that I lived a “perfect” life, due to how well I was able to mask any pain that would sometimes come my way. Due to this “perfect lifestyle” that people thought I was living, I decided to start blogging so that people could see that my life was no different than theirs, I simply would just smile through my struggles. In sharing my testimonies, through a lens of transparency, I prayed that each blog that I wrote someone somewhere would be uplifted and inspired by my faith. So, on June 10, 2016 “lifewithlexxii,” was launched.

When I began writing, I realized that so many people were enjoying these small testaments of my life as it helped them through theirs. This gift of writing was definitely God-given and has opened many doors for me. Due to my compelling gift, after publishing my fourth blog on my personal website, I became a published writer for Teen Graffiti magazine, as an inspirational columnist. After graduating college, I was hired to work as a tour guide for Sweet Tooth Hotel, an immersive art gallery located in downtown Dallas. Due to my love for writing, I decided to write a recap over our first installation. I sent it over to our owner, she loved it, and I was later on hired to be the content writer for our company. Simply put, your gifts will ALWAYS make room for you.

Although writing has always been my first love, while at Texas Tech, I was highly involved in the communications department and in media with athletics. This led me to create my own YouTube channel, @lexiwesleytv when I returned home from school. With this new outlet, I figured that it would be similar to my blogs except now everything would be in the form of a video. This would now give me a chance to express my creativity in editing and visual storytelling. This would also be preparation for my future goals as I have become more and more comfortable on camera with each video that I produce. My YouTube channel currently showcases my faith, my family, and will eventually showcase feature stories on my friends. I believe that in producing content like this, when we share our truths and we are authentic and transparent to those around us then we become much more relatable and helpful to those trying to overcome similar situations.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any road in life is smooth. Nothing worth having comes easy, I think is how that quote goes lol. If the road was smooth, then what could you simply learn? In the words of Andy Mineo, “in my mess, there’s a message, in my test, testimony.” In getting to where I am now, I have definitely had to overcome feelings of inadequacy, doubt, worry, fear of failure, rejection, and comparison. In being gifted, I have had to learn to not disqualify myself. I’ve had to remind myself that I am talented and that I shouldn’t shorthand myself when it comes to my skills and abilities. It’s okay to clap for yourself and let yourself know how dope you are. The same way that I’m quick to celebrate those around me, I had to learn and I’m still learning to celebrate and clap for me too.

When it came to doubt, I had to remind myself that where I am and everything that I have now is simply a harvest of all of the seeds I’ve sown along the way. I’ve learned to be okay with failing and making mistakes because they bring about the greatest growth. I learned that rejection is just another form of redirection and sometimes when someone says no, God just has something WAY better in store, or he’s simply saying “not yet.” Lastly, I’ve learned that the only person that I’m in competition with, is myself. Since I’ve been home I’ve been working on becoming the best version of myself, perfecting my craft, my talents, and abilities to be a light in my field of work and for His kingdom. No matter how similar someone else’s dream or vision may be to mine, I know that we are all called to accomplish something different on this earth and no one else can accomplish what God put ME on earth to do.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Most people know what they’re doing right after college, some even have a job lined up, yet I didn’t really have a plan. I just knew I was moving back home and I had a year to figure it out, according to my parents. These last few months back home have been a faith walk, to say the least, but I’m very grateful for my journey thus far and the work that Christ has done within me.

I have two jobs right now that I absolutely LOVE and I can’t thank God enough for. I literally have the BEST of both worlds, if you ask me. I am an Assistant Manager dealing with media relations at Sweet Tooth Hotel and I work for Radio One, Dallas – an Urban One Company in our promotions department. I think what I’m most proud of right now would be my growth that has come from these two places in such a short period of time. Both of these companies allow me to be myself and I’m surrounded by an awesome work family at both locations. My bosses and co-workers see the potential and talent in me and they are really good about pulling everything that’s inside of me out. They allow room for growth and encourage me along the way. They help me to step out of my comfort zone and are so supportive of every endeavor that I take. I think it’s great to be surrounded by people that genuinely care and look out for you and not just themselves. Everyone just wants to see everyone win in all that they do at both of my workplaces and I just LOVE that about them.

I think the thing that sets me apart from others is my optimistic attitude and faith in Christ. Being positive makes all the difference and life is too short to be anything but happy. I will always live my life through a lens of joy, love, faith, and positivity. I know that my circumstances won’t ever define me but they have helped mold me into who I am today. Everything that I have overcome has played a part in all that I am now and all that I will be in the future. I have trusted and believed in God for so many things since I’ve been home which has grown my faith tremendously. He has proven himself faithful to me so many times in writing this story of my life, and each chapter that unfolds just grows my excitement for what he’s going to continue to do. I believe that my spirit of expectancy in Him and my positivity is definitely contagious to those around me.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think that Dallas is a great place to start a career for anyone. I think it’s great because of all of the opportunities that are available to us in this big city. I know that not everyone has the luxury of staying home while trying to figure their life out and pursuing things that they love, so when the opportunity presents itself it’s important to take advantage. I believe that the opportunities are endless here and if you pinpoint exactly what you want to do, never settle, and actively put in the work then things will begin to fall into place for you. It’s also important to remember that when you’re doing what you love or pursuing what you love, you shouldn’t worry, because the money will always come.

Lexi your blogs inspire me every time I read them. I love your spirit and enthusiasm about life. I’ve watched you grow from an infant to a teenager and now a beautiful young woman. I’ve always known that you would excel in life because you always have been humble and such a positive out look on life and people, even though they may not have been so nice t you, you always kept that forgiving spirit. I am so proud of you! Your parents did a good job raising with God’s help. Always remain humble and keep God First in your life. Love you Auntie
