Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Montgomery.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Like so many women photographers, I started taking pictures of my babies after they were born. That quickly lead to taking pictures of friends’ babies and then friends of friends and before I knew it, I had a little business! Once my son was born I started a blog for family & called it “My Heart In Print”. Later, that name easily translated to a photography business. I was a speech-language-pathologist for over 20 years. I love working with kids and families, but photography allowed me a creative outlet that I was craving.
After having my own kids it became something I could schedule around their schedules. It’s also been a huge blessing as a way of keeping in touch with people I may not have otherwise. I get so excited when someone I haven’t seen in a while calls & asks me to take their family or newborn portraits! I’ve photographed several families two, three or four times over the years and it’s such a privilege to watch them grow. I’m so thankful for their support.
Has it been a smooth road?
As with all new things, there was a learning curve. I wish I had been interested in photography when I was still in school! As it happened I had to do a lot of self-teaching, reading photography books, watching tutorials online, and of course a lot of trial and error. Hopefully, I won’t ever stop learning.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the My Heart In Print story. Tell us more about the business.
My passion is to create art that freezes the everyday moments and reflects the beauty God gave you. I love putting tangible memories into your hands for you to cherish forever. My focus is a natural light newborn, children, senior and family portraits. Life isn’t perfect, so I don’t strive for perfection in my photos. I look for the real you. “Don’t shoot what it looks like, shoot what it feels like.” – David Alan Harvey
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Who knows?? It seems like cameras are improving almost at the rate of computers.
Lighter and faster, right? I do think it’s important to not fall into every trend that comes along. With any small business (and especially a creative one) I think the goal is to stay current but timeless.
We improve our skills and continue to grow in our knowledge base and business practices, but overall I want to give clients portraits that they will look at in 20 years and remember how it felt to hold those tiny fingers, or the way their baby’s hair smelled after bath time, or the way their little girl always twirled wild and free.
