Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Starks.
Lisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Dallas from Chicago in 1999. Upon My arrival I aggressively took off “working” The corporate world. Being from Chicago and being given a chance to work in the corporate world. It was my goal to climb the corporate ladder. Had an Accident that prevented me from working, I was literally bed ridden for over a month. I would eventually would. So Now I’m home broke, busted and disgusted with no income. I had to do something to survive. I had an old sewing machine that was just sitting idly on the stand, and it was if, something inside of me said “sew ” lol, and I was thinking to myself, how can I sew with a broken leg. And it was as if something said “use your good leg”. And, that’s exactly what I did. I started sewing Aprons, and I would sale them to housewives, barbers, and restaurants. I used the funds that I made from the Aprons to purchase Couture Fabric and would eventually be the neighborhood- word of mouth go to girl for Custom prom dresses. The amazing thing is anytime I would sale an item, it appeared always to be someone to say to me “I wish I could sew”. Which is what eventually lead me to teach sewing Classes. I love sewing.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would have to say that just like any other industry, the fashion business can be challenging because it changes so fast just like computer technology lol. So you have to stay on top of the current trends while carving out your own niche.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Uniquity Couture – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in Custom – Plus size women clothing for the morbidly obese. Most plus size clothing only go up to a size 3x/4x. We specialize in Custom Clothing up to a size 5x. It makes me proud to make Trendy, Quality, Couture clothing for the plus size woman. As a plus-size woman myself, I know how stressful it can be to buy an outfit off of the shelf that say’s one-size fits all, and when you get it home lol, it doesn’t fit you! My garments are made to order and No two-pieces are alike 🙂 Unlike other Fashion Designers, I not only sit with you to come up with the design, but I make article of clothing myself by hand. Unlike most fashion designers that use manufacturers. I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT UNIQUITY COUTURE’S CLOTHING IS MADE BY HAND, ONE GARMENT AT A TIME WITH LOVE.
We also specialize in Custom Children Clothing, oversized tutu’s and costumes.
As far as our Sewing classes are concerned, we offer classes that are tailored made for the individual. So whether you are your advanced and just want to touch up on your skills, or a beginner that no absolutely nothing at all about sewing, we offer private and semi-private classes just for you.
