Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Newcomer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kenny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been taking photos since I was a teen but mostly snapshots. I grew up primarily drawing as a creative outlet. While serving in the Marines I used to draw portraits from photos but the detail in many of them were lacking so I decided that when I got out, I would get a good camera and start taking my own.
I bought my first SLR in 1991, Minolta 3xi. I used it to take photos of my girls growing up and my (ex)wife til our divorce. In 2006 I bought my first DSLR and decided to do some photography for others on the side that quickly went from shooting family portraits to models.
From 2006-15, I kept everything under one brand although the name changed a couple of times. In 2015 I started Logan Grey Photography to prove a point. I have many people in this town who want(ed) to see me fail or out to sully my name. For what reasons, one can only speculate. So I invented a person no one knew and have had good results with it.
My real name is Kenny Newcomer. Logan is a brand only, not a person. With this brand, I only shoot models as a creative outlet.
I used to charge models the same as I do my clients under my other brand in order to help me by clothing, props, pay for studio time and such. For the past two years, I have been using Patreon to cover all of these expenses so I now primarily shoot models under trade agreements
I mainly shoot Art, Lifestyle and Glamour, from clothed to nudes to some Erotica. I use Sony bodies and lenses. Dabble in video work.
Mostly, location with natural lighting and studio when the shoot requires it. I’m totally upfront and honest with everyone about every aspect of the shoot before a date is even set. All models know how much exposure any set will require and where the images will be used.
I plan on doing this till I can no longer physically push the button. The only things more important to me than my work are my daughters.
Everyone and everything else can find a back seat.
I’m very outspoken about many things that go on in our subculture that most just let go. Sorry but if I see something is not right, I’ll rock that boat til the whole crew drowns! This is especially true of secret groups, ran by cowards, that slander other to get them blacklisted. Got something to say about someone, say it in open forum. If you cant, then either it’s not true or it’s not true. DFW is not a modeling mecca.
No one here can ruin a (your) “career” because you stood up for yourself. If they could, they would not be here in the first place!
Has it been a smooth road?
From the start, it was a struggle. Me being new, thinking I knew everything, would not listen to anyone who was trying to help me, two years later after getting some local recognition you also get haters and those who want to see you fail or actually just want to try to ruin your reputation. I have several (photographers) who would like to see nothing more than for me to pack my cameras and either quit or leave town. Why they picked me, I haven’t a clue. But that’s ok. If they have nothing better to do than to keep spewing lies about me, let them. I’m not going anywhere.
Because I have put my whole being into my craft it cost me my bill-paying job, my car, put a strain on family relationships. But in the end, I have prevailed. I may not be making big bucks but at least I do have my motorcycle paid in full, a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food in my belly and I don’t have a ton of bills to pay each month.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Logan Grey Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a local DFW photographer of 11+ years. I specialize in shooting models from aspiring to experienced in the genres of Art, Glamour, Lifestyle and Erotica.
I’m proud of how far I’ve come as an artist and photographer. Despite adversity, I’m still doing what I love to do.
I feel what sets me apart from other photographers are the following:
I don’t use Photoshop (don’t even own it) so much of my work is close to out of the camera. When I need to make adjustments, I use Lightroom. I do not alter the appearance of my models. I do not remove tattoos or scars or stretch marks. I’m very much a minimalist and still deliver what I feel to be quality work.
I give aspiring models a chance to get in front of the camera without having to pay out of pocket. I also educate them in their craft. I feel if all a model walks away from a shoot with is a handful (meaning up to a dozen) of her best shots and that’s it, then she wasted her time.
Each shoot should be a learning experience on all sides of the camera.
I don’t try to date models (most are younger than my youngest!)
I do my best to make them comfortable enough to shoot what I shoot before we ever actually meet up in person to shoot. I’m totally honest as to what to expect. I hide nothing from them. I answer all questions the best I can.
When a model (any level) gets in front of my camera, she knows she can let her guard down and just be herself and have fun. She doesn’t have to worry about inappropriate talk or handling of her body. We’ve already discussed everything and I stick to the game plan.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’m originally from Oak Cliff. I take pride in that. I would love to see the OC brought back to its former glory days and I’m glad the Bishop Arts District had set an example of reclaiming and rebuilding. Now if only the rest would follow suit.
What I like least are the drivers! People in this town (Hell, all of DFW) learn to drive from watching NASCAR, playing Super Mario Karts and get their DLs from a Cracker Jack Box! Law or no law, still have too many out there on their cell phones when they should be watching the road. They exit from 2-3 lanes over cutting off traffic. Speed cause they think by swerving in and out of traffic at 90 mph will save them 15 mins on a 20 min drive. I ride a motorcycle and I do my best to keep my distance from EVERYONE!
