Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Nichols.
Logan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up on a small farm near Tyler, Texas, raising horses and goats. I was involved in 4-H where I loved showing livestock, played some sports in high school and was on the speech and debate team. I loved agriculture and animals, everything about it, so growing up, I always thought I was going to be a veterinarian. With that in mind, I attended Texas A&M, but soon had a change of plans after taking Chemistry, I knew I was not going to be a vet!
For a while, I thought about being a lawyer, but eventually, I got a degree in agriculture and economics, with an emphasis on economic analysis that would end up shaping my Real Estate career.
After Texas A&M, my first job was as a commodity trader with Imperial Sugar Company, however, due to bankruptcy, my position was eliminated. I remember thinking, the world was ending, but in hindsight, it was actually the best thing that ever happened. What I remembered was that every job I’ve ever had came through a relationship, and this was no different – when I didn’t know what to do, I reached out to those around me for guidance and that opened the next door. Just because one door closes, don’t always expect another to open – sometimes it is a window – or another opportunity you never saw coming. And I did not expect what was next.
I found myself in Washington, D.C., working as a consultant with the USPS, the FBI, and the Department of Defense, working on process improvements and training initiatives with representatives around the national country. In his role as a chief of staff at the Dept. of Defense, Logan managed multi-million dollar budgets and worked with a broad array of clients which prepared him for his next steps.
After six years, I felt like I really wanted to be home in Texas. I had invested in real estate here, and thinking about my skill set, and what I wanted to do, I knew my passion was people, and I knew my skill set aligned with real estate. Real estate is about relationships and guiding clients through one of the biggest decisions they’ll ever make.
When I moved to Dallas, I didn’t know many people at all, but I know Relationships are everything, and because of that, I was able to meet some really great people who were very helpful in helping me make that transition. I met people thought networking and building friendships but one fun way I built those relationships is through joining a kickball league when I moved to Dallas. The very first house I sold was to somebody that I played kickball with.
In my first year, I did a little over $4.5 million in real estate volume, and in the second year, I surpassed $9 million and I met the person who would become my business partner and together we co-own and manage The Standard Real Estate brokerage, leading about 40 agents in both DFW and an office in Tyler. My business partner, Zach de Bernardi and I just hit it off as business partners. We both see things very differently, but we both value and respect each other’s opinions; Zach never fails to challenge me, and he knows I will always challenge him, but what makes us a good team is we never settle. We know that when we make a decision, we have done our best to consider each other’s opinions and we know that we have made the best decisions for those we lead.
I think part of my story is that I measure my success through the help I provide and the relationships that come from those I work with. Like I said earlier, my passion is serving others. The most important thing for someone is to find a place to call home, and it means a lot to me to help make that a reality. Keeping that in mind is what I believe continues to drive all of my successes and the ability to help others.
Over 90 percent of my clients are friendships and former relationships. Many people don’t want to do business with friends, but I’m proud of that many of my friends do – having those relationships and friendships where they want to work with you because they see your work ethic in everything you do. My life and my work are intertwined. When you love what you do, it’s part of who you are.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, I would not say the path I have taken was smooth – there were many curves, backing up and it was quite bumpy at times. They say hindsight is 20/20, and now knowing where I am and having confidence that a bumpy road isn’t always bad, I think a smooth road is boring.
As I mentioned in my story, losing my job was terrifying – it was my first job out of college, but by losing that job it opened up another opportunity, which opened another and so on.
When I got into Real Estate, not knowing many people was a huge struggle – getting out there and meeting people is fun, but it is also essential to be successful.
Another struggle is there are so many incredible agents in Dallas, and you have to continue to find a way to set yourself apart – whether that is thru marketing yourself differently, delivering a better client experience or the brokerage you’re with – you have to keep in mind your competing against some amazing agents and while that is a struggle, its an opportunity to find ways to elevate yourself to be better.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a managing partner of the Standard Real Estate, a boutique brokerage that is agent-centric so we can enable our agents to deliver the best client service. Much of my time is spent managing the agents and day to day operations of the brokerage serving as the COO. Mentoring, coaching and guiding agents is truly a passion, and to see them when they win is incredibly rewarding. I also have the opportunity to be a problem solver and help agents work through unique situations that impact clients and contracts differently.
Personally, I also am a Realtor who runs the Logan Nichols Group, and love working with my past clients. I have worked with clients all over DFW, as far north as Prosper and south as Waxahachie. I see my clients as friends, and those relationships have taken me all over the metroplex.
I specialize in first time home buyers, with many of my clients never owning a home before. One thing that sets me apart is that I see my time as an investment in a person, not the home and I am a resource long after the closing table. My background in management and extensive real estate experience helps me solve complex problems, come up with creative solutions and guide clients through the home buying and home owning journey, making it fun, memorable and easy.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The diversity that our city offers is one thing I love the most about Dallas and North Texas, and it is something that is not celebrated as much as it should be! From the diversity of the people and cultures to the diversity of different foods and neighborhoods, Dallas is truly a welcoming city that everyone can find a place to call home – both physically and emotionally.
Whether you’re in Deep Ellum, Highland Park or Oak Lawn to Oak Cliff, the cultures, foods, people and traditions in each neighborhood are all something that I love to learn more about, love to celebrate and truly make Dallas great.
I think it goes without saying, but with growth comes to traffic and while I love seeing DFW grow and having the opportunity to show others why I love Dallas, the traffic is by far the thing I like the least!
