Today we’d like to introduce you to Loren Jones.
Loren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Sure! As a kid I was drawn to fantasy books and all things mythological. My small little world was filled with characters from the literary masters: David Eddings, Brandon Sanderson and Tolkien. But what really changed my life was when I was in the 7th or 8th grade, my school took a field trip to Scarborough Faire, down in Waxahachie, TX. Being surrounded by fairies, wizards and the occasional dragon, my fantasies came to life and I was in love.
While I was at Scarborough, I found a Bladesmith by the name of Paul Dubro. This somber mountain of a man was kind enough to patiently answer the barrage of questions from a little 14-year-old boy who was all but drooling at the myriad of medieval weapons on display. I was enthralled by the process and history of weapon making. Fast forward almost 20 years later and those ideals still affect my ideation and design process. After getting my BFA and now working towards my MFA, it all stems back from my first, certainly not my last, adventure into that wonderful and fantastical realm.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is without a struggle. Sure, I could talk about the tough times of starting a business during a pandemic, but I feel like I’ve been lucky. Great parents, supportive teachers (shout out to Suguru Hiraide and James Thurman) and wonderful classmates have made this path I’ve chosen to walk much less of a burden and more of an adventure.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Omega Sculpture and Design – what should we know?
I wanted to structure a business that could revolve around my love of metalworking and digital fabrication. So, at the beginning of the year, I formed Omega Sculpture and Design. It was from an apprenticeship through my MFA professor, James Thurman, that led me to work in tandem with 23 Design Co. This opportunity has granted me access to a full-service machine shop, business assistance and a platform to create my future. We have some awesome projects in the works that I can’t wait to share!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Collaboration with mentors, finding a community through my work and not hesitating to tackle projects bigger than myself in order to share this passion with others.
