Today we’d like to introduce you to Lovie Baxter.
Lovie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I became a registered nurse in 2005. My specialty area was in palliative care. Almost immediately after going in and out of facilities that catered to the elderly population, I was able to see a common trend. I noticed no matter how beautiful the facility was or what the facility’ s reputation was in the community, the common theme was lack of exceptional care for this population. I made it my mission to take my passion for caring for elders and turn it into something that would definitely help fill this void.
Initially, my fear of being a new nurse halted my dreams. Next came being comfortable working for others and even managing their business as if it were my own. I stayed content doing this for over 15 years. I was often told by my colleagues, patients and customers that they could tell I loved what I did. As the years went by, I continued to build onto the foundation of my career. I was already a master’s prepared social worker prior to starting in nursing school. I then went for my bachelor’s degree in nursing and several years later I obtained my master’s degree specialized as a family nurse practitioner.
However, the itch to provide a better environment for this population was still present. I prayed about how to overcome my fears and set my mind to pursue what I wanted to do from the start of my career. In August 2018, with the push and encouragement from several people I opened my first home. This was truly an answered prayer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have definitely been some rocky moments along the way. Although I spent most of my career in management this was completely different. I had to quickly learn the fine art of being the middle person when it came to keeping my staff happy and residents and their families happy. I felt the impact of staff not completing their agreed upon responsibilities all the way to staff being a no call no show and how that can strongly affect the company. Other challenges along the way have been to not allow my heart to serve others, cripple the fact that this is a business. I’ve had to take my money management skills to the next level and look at costs from a bigger prospective. I’ve learned so much about not only working in a customer service industry but owning a business in this industry.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
A Touch Of Love Care Home was started with the simple intention of showing love, Gods love for all people. I am a Nurse Practitioner as well as a Social Worker, and I’ve dedicated my entire career to serving the geriatric population. This is not only my calling but also my ministry. As the owner, I am very involved in the day to day operation and management of the home and the care of the residents. I also ensure that my staff are fully trained as well.
A Touch of Love Care Home is an intimate residence that houses a maximum of three residents per home. This provides for personalized care, personal attention, and good old fashion TLC!
The perfect fit for my home is any seniors who can no longer stay in their own homes independently. This is also a great option for those who do not want to reside in a nursing home or an assisted living facility. This home environment allows families to have comfort in knowing their loved one is not just a number and that they can have a sense of home while receiving excellent care.
The biggest fact that sets my home apart from other residential care homes is that I am a nurse practitioner and social worker. I also stand out and my company is known for the sensitivity and empathy that I can provide due to my strong background in palliative care. Families know that when they move their loved one into one of my homes, they can age in place without the worry of having to move again, as the resident starts to decline.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to continue to grow A Touch of Love Care Home and educate families on their options when it comes to senior living. I want to be the #1 preferred choice when it comes to residential care in Tarrant county. I want my company’s reputation to be one of showing love, empathy and providing quality personalized care. I also want to add a second tier to my company by providing other options such as sitter services and in-home care.

My elderly mother is a resident and she loves Lovie, the staff, the home. She truly feels part of the family. The care is wonderful and we are so grateful the Lord opened this door for us!
