Today we’d like to introduce you to Ludwig Mohr.
Ludwig, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After College, everybody around me wanted to go and have a nice office, a pager and being important, I went Trade: Learned Handbookbinding in Germany to Master Degree, Typesetting and Letterpress in Switzerland to Master Degree, spend a couple of years moving about Europe, learning to deepen my Skills. Ia Paris I got a CAP (Certification professionel reliures soigneuse et bibliophile), spend Time with Hartmut Frielinghaus in Hamburg, printing for Horst Janssen and becoming a Printmaker on Copperplate (Etching, Engraving, Mezzotint). Always read, wrote and one of my mentors urged me to turn one of my papers into a more substantial piece. Earned me a Dr. in Book history, this is not a Ph.D.).
Got invited to give a Lecture at USC, Los Angeles, that weekend I was run over by a Driver under Influence and then spend some time in Surgery and recovery. That is how I ended up in Los Angeles, established my Company, worked for Artists, printed large sheets on my Handpress, build large Books and three dimension stuff, build Movie Props, e.g., the entire Nixon Library, all the Year Books in Veronica Mars, the Elf Book. While working on the Titanic Movie, after a long stretch of work, a Prop builder saw an Invite in my mail for a leisurely Lunch in Long Beach. That is where I met my Wife to be. We have been together since.
Has it been a smooth road?
Then you’re mid 20’s and you are just good at what you do and get 3 Trade Master degrees you have a lot of 50+ year old established Handwerksmeister who you offend by just being in existence. So it was a hard struggle to be what I am today, aside from a very few Mentors who cared for the Craft more than the BS and helped me along. I lectured as a Guest Lecturer at UCLA/DMA, Art Center and SCI-Arc , all in Los Angeles for some 15 years and have run into people who describe in Graphic Design how to create a surface on a Letter over 5 pages of Text than you can do it in 5 min or less on a Computer.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
