Meet Mahogany Henderson of Most Precious Promotions in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mahogany Henderson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2009, I started DJing during my sophomore year while attending University of Missouri- St. Louis bka UMSL. My first gig was with the radio station on campus called Umsl Radio. At the end of every show, I would do a late night mix that I would get messages on social media saying they make me want to dance. Every show I provided my quick mixes to would lead to both internet and college radio platforms requesting to syndicate my radio show.

During this time, I did not take gigs outside of college radio until my Junior year when I decided to start hosting my own events from parties to fundraisers. This led to the birth of my company. Most Precious Promotions. I remember the times when my events reached a certain status, more competition came. There were times I wanted to quit djing and hosting events but I was fueled by the fact my drive motivated my entire city. I had younger girls and guys looking up to me to as their mentor. Eventually, I upheld that title and started giving free consulting services to some of my close associates.

While still attending school, I struggled to manage all my passions and dreams so, in 2012, I decided to stop hosting events and focused more on my other goals such as writing poetry, photography, videography, and school. I felt so out of sync with life once I took a break to focus on other aspects of art and entertainment. So in the fourth quarter, I returned to Djing full speed, linking with the top DJ and Radio networks to advertise myself as a Mixshow DJ and the owner of a very elite promotional company. As I continue to grow as a DJ by practicing and studying my peers more doors opened up for me as a Performance DJ.

For a while, it was hard to be recognized as a Performance DJ after establishment my name as a Mixshow DJ and Radio Personality but I continue to push forward until I got booked for my very first wedding in 2014. After that very first major booking, steam started to form for me and I was called on to perform at even more weddings as well as major concerts with Devin the Dude, AK of Do or Die, Mickey Factz and the list goes on.

Through the seasons of 2014 and 2015, I djed at my companies events and traveled the world as a Tour Dj for a Hip Hop collaborative from North Carolina. At that moment, I fell in love with the idea of traveling the world as a DJ, so I added Tour DJ to my many labels to be versatile and well rounded as a DJ. I wanted to master each opportunity that I was faced with as the music lover I am. I wanted to add to the culture by including the element of being a DJ for artist.

Between the years of 2015-2018, I Djed at performance venues, bars, festivals, restaurants, and fundraisers around my hometown of St. Louis, and other places such as Ohio, Chicago, Texas, Oklahoma, and surrounding areas. In 2017, I relocated to Texas to start a new job and to work with my Fleet DJ family which led to both DJ bookings around the Texas area and Oklahoma. I started networking with surrounding establishments through craigslist, Facebook and google until I was able to secure a residency at the historical spot in Midtown, Oklahoma called Fassler Hall in Winter of 2018.

In 2018, I was driving to Oklahoma on the weekends to network and play at Fassler Hall all multiple times a month till I was hired as a DJ for one of the biggest cruise line companies in the world. At this moment, I became a Traveling International DJ and had to stop playing at the amazing Fassler Hall till I returned this year in February. I knew it is a must to stay connected to the growing DJ market as there will always be another entertainer or business establishing themselves.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I came from a working-class family, being a DJ or an entertainer was not considered a job but more of a hobby. Although, my family supported me there were times that I was questioned about how long I was planning to pursue this hobby. I did not feel it was a hobby, so at this very moment, I am happy to say that my family see my vision and expresses their happiness to their peers about how I started from the very bottom and have grown as a business owner and an entertainer.

I’ve struggled with marketing, branding, and managing myself for many years. When I was a Senior in High School I started selling snacks which helped me learn how to manage a business rather small or big, I was ready to push forth as a business owner once I graduated but I had to establish more skills but as the social media marketing era came about it caused even more of a struggle to be able to manage a consistent marketing strategy that would assist me in getting more than mobile gigs. There were times I became anxious and wanted to secure a residency but honestly, I was not experienced enough to read crowds. I wanted to establish myself in multiple areas of entertainment before I realized that I have to master one before I accept another opportunity. The older I became, the more patience I become, which is what has helped me secure more opportunities that the universe has in store for me.

If I had to start over, I would create a better plan of what I wanted to accomplish first and follow them. I would trust in a team to help with management and maintaining my everyday activities. I would take more time for self-reflection and write more poetry for my book…
