Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Jones.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved music and writing songs. I wrote my first song when I was six and I guess I just never stopped. Singing came much later. My older sister was the singer in my family and she was and still is a great singer. I think younger me thought I wasn’t as good as her so I never really gave myself a voice. I started singing in church choir with my sister when I was five and stayed in choirs at school until I graduated high school. I didn’t realize I was any good at it until I landed a solo in my high schools pop show junior year. The crowd was huge and I didn’t move a muscle the entire time I was on stage. After that I guess I just started to believe in myself a lot more. I attended a music composition camp at Texas School for the Blind and learned like five or six different instruments in one summer. At the end of the camp there was this huge showcase for campers to perform their works and it was absolutely the scariest thing I did thus far. I performed the first song I had ever composed there, just me, my guitar, and my voice. As traumatizing as that whole performance was, it made me realize that I had fallen deeply in love with creating music and it was all I wanted to do. After that summer I did a few more performances at school but they were only covers. I wasn’t inspired to write more until I began to struggle with insomnia and depression. I found that singing was the only thing that made me feel satisfied and fulfilled. It allowed me to express more than I could through words, so I started writing again. I posted the songs I came up with on SoundCloud and it just became something that I do regularly.
Please tell us about your art.
I write, produce, and sing on most of my songs. My music is about growth and healing and positivity in uncertain times. I make it to soothe my anxiety about whatever it is I’m stressed about at that moment. It’s almost like my more grounded level-headed self is telling my neurotic self to chill but in a nice comforting way. I hope that when others listen to my music, they can put their problems into perspective and have a lighter take on whatever it is that they’re struggling with. My music is all about being kind to yourself and doing what you need to do to feel alright. I chose the artist name phlowerie because it’s a nickname from my youth and it reminds me of myself when I was happier. It’s a happy name! Who doesn’t like flowers? I try and stick to happiness in my music because sometimes it’s not easy to be happy.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I’ve defiantly struggled the most financially with equipment. Music equipment is so so so expensive. A good microphone is easily over $200 and doesn’t even get me started on production software. I didn’t have anything but a laptop when I started out, but I found a way to make it work with what I did have so I guess that’s my advice to people who don’t feel they have what they need to be successful. I recorded my first couple of songs in GarageBand with my apple headphones as a microphone. You don’t need expensive stuff to get your work out there. The stuff you need will come as you work on your craft.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find me on pretty much every streaming service known to man. Soundcloud, Bandcamp, iTunes, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon, Deezer, Google Play, Youtube, Pandora, etc. I also do shows kind of often around Denton and sometimes in Deep Ellum. If you follow me on Instagram @Phlowerie, I normally post when and where my next shows will be.
