Today we’d like to introduce you to Manuel and Kellee Pruitt.
Manuel, better known as “Cake Daddy” began designing cakes in 1992 when his mother literally made him attend a cake decorating class at J C Penny that he did not want to attend. From there, it was just a hobby until 2013 when he lost his job as a manager at a trucking company. Subsequently, he and his beautiful wife Kellee decided to step out on faith and start their full-time cake business from their home in Glenn Heights, TX.
Since then, God has opened many doors for them, such as appearing on the nationally televised show “Cake Wars” on the Food Network, many appearances on WFAA’s News 8 Daybreak and by even being featured on “Good Morning Texas!”. To top it off, he and his wife recently were the winners of the Cooking Channel show “Cake Hunters” where they created an amazing custom cowboy themed cake for Southfork Ranch where the hugely popular television show “Dallas” was filmed!
Cake Daddy has created cakes for celebrity names such as world-renowned preacher Bishop T D Jakes, Von Miller of the world champion Denver Broncos and contestant on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, Dez Bryant of the Dallas Cowboys and Michael Finley of the World Champion San Antonio Spurs, just to name a few. He credits God first, his mom, and his wife for his success!!!
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to our success been full of many highs and a few lows. The key to persevering is NEVER losing your faith and keeping your eyes on the prize without allowing distractions to hinder you. Running your own business is tougher than working ANY job but you have to keep pressing and moving forward.
I think the biggest challenge has been managing all of the orders that come in. We’ve been blessed with an overflow of business that can at times, be overwhelming but God has seen us through it out. Things are now pretty consistent and our business is running pretty smooth.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Designs By Cake Daddy story. Tell us more about the business.
My wife bakes and I design and decorate all of the cakes. My mom also helps us out with baking when we have a ton of orders (which is most times). We specialize in wedding and celebration cakes. We are most proud of keeping God first in our business.
God delivered me from alcohol over 5 years ago so I made a promise that we wouldn’t do any alcohol themed cakes. We also don’t do explicit cakes. I just don’t believe they help your brand. I’m noticing more and more that many cake businesses are following suit and not creating them. I think that’s awesome!!!
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
In the next 5 years, I pray that we are creating wedding cakes only due to they are my passion. In 10 years I plan on being retired and possibly teaching the art of cake designing.
