Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcelle LeBlanc.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marcelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My career in the adult business started in 1998. I started out as a DVD buyer and moved from production to post production to sales and eventually owning my retail stores. It has been a very rewarding and educational journey. Even though this was not my intended path, I am very happy life has brought me to this place. To Texas. And to owning Velvet Box.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 2011, Alliance Town Center (Ross Perot Jr.’s Hillwood Properties) filed suit against Velvet Box. For two years, Velvet Box was pressured to close. The suit was a bullying tactic where legal fees were run up so high that they hoped we would give up and go away. We eventually had to move our first store. Our biggest struggle continues to be preconceived notions of what kind of store we are. People in Texas are not accustomed to coming to a nice place where they can get their questions answered in a comfortable environment. It’s our biggest struggle in every new location.
Please tell us about Velvet Box.
Velvet box is a small chain of lingerie and novelty boutiques. We educate people on sexuality products in a safe and upscale environment. The three things that set us apart from all of our competitors is an upscale environment, product experts, and superior customer service. Our friendly professionals promise to put you at ease.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My horses. I love horses. It’s where you will find me almost every single morning. At the barn, I moved to Fort Worth because the Triple Crown of Cutting is here. It was my dream to one day be able to ride in it.
