Meet Margaret Bryant of Margaret Bryant Photography in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Bryant.

Margaret, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my photography business in 1998 originally photographing dog sports. It didn’t take long before I realized I wanted to more than that, so I took up photographing dogs alone, and dogs and their people. Nineteen years ago, nobody was doing that. Today, lots of people are doing that!

At first my business was part time, and after a while I got so busy that I couldn’t do justice to both jobs. I quit the day job to do photography full time and I haven’t looked back!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Quitting a high paying full-time job to do photography full time is pretty scary. But it was the right thing to do and it was the right time. As I said, I haven’t looked back. The challenge today is to make sure I stand out in what is now a very crowded field.

My work is pretty identifiable and doesn’t look like anyone else’s work. Then it’s a matter of listening to that inner creative voice and producing work that feeds my creative soul and is something that dog and cat owners want to spend money on.

Margaret Bryant Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’ve been in business since 1998. I photograph dogs alone and dogs with their people. I create photographic portraits that capture the beauty, art, and whimsy of a dog (or cat) and the emotion of their relationship with their humans. Most of my work is in the studio, which is different from most pet photographers. I also like to laugh a lot, so I work to find the whimsical side of a dog or cat.

I give back to the dog community by raising money for spay/neuter clinics through my Bow WOW photo sessions. The short photo sessions use bright colors, wild patterns, and fun props, with all of the session fees going to charities that run spay/neuter programs. To date we have raised over $22,000.

I also do the Weimaraner Rescue of Texas calendar every year. It is a creative outlet for me as well as a way for Weim rescue to raise money for their group.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success can be defined in so many ways. For me, it is not about money, or prestige, or even recognition. Although all of those things are nice. For me it is that my being here on earth made a difference. It can be big or small, a few differences or many differences.

I just don’t want to leave this earth thinking that I just cruised through life.

I don’t think I have any markers, as my target is always moving. Once I accomplish one goal, I come up with another. I get bored easily so I am always full of ideas and never enough time to accomplish them!
