Today we’d like to introduce you to Marianna Zimmerman.
Marianna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As far as how I got started.. it took me a long time. As a single mother for a long time, I always worked two jobs on & off, from the time I was 19 until my mid-30s, so I started late in life, but I was always taking Design courses and classes on the side, always pursuing my Design degree.
Then about 12 yrs ago, my adult son (who is a web designer) said to me, he would make me a website to advertise my skills and help me start my own business, but in order to do that, I needed to build my portfolio with photos of projects.
Of course, I didn’t have any yet (just of my own home), so he suggested that I put an ad online as a freelance decorator, advertising my services with a Free consultation with an hourly cost to get my business going and help build a clientele. That’s what I did. That feels like a lifetime ago, but I’ve had about 70 + clients since that time. My business has flourished since then I am now an LLC, and I’m continuing to grow.
I picked this specific name for my business because It’s just how I live my life. Not just in designing, but every aspect of my life! Through any trials and tribulations, I feel, no matter what the situation is, if you just have faith, patience and you just believe, the best is truly… YET to come!
In decorating, I tell my clients, if you’re unhappy with the current look of your home, don’t worry – let’s change it. There’s a saying that goes, “Your current situation doesn’t have to be your final destination,” and it’s true. When I look at a room, no matter what it looks like at that present time, I see something bigger – I see what is to be when I’m done with it. I see what’s to come. So in living that way, it was apparent that although it’s a long name, it was the ONLY name for my business.
Through everything, God is there and no matter what the outcome, never fear, because the best is always yet to come! I live by that.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road- It started out small with clients here & there, leaving my family with one steady household income for about a year and a half.
My husband & I were building our own dream home at the time & I wanted to contribute to that, but we knew when starting your own business, there would be struggles & that I had to be patient & not chase the paycheck, I knew that If I could get myself out there & show my skills, that my gift would speak for itself, hence- the money would come!
I mean, I was not known, I didn’t have my name out there in the Design industry so I took any client that came my way. I will say though, I have been blessed to have been fortunate enough to have some of the greatest clients who, most I can say are now friends.
The BEST is yet to come DESIGNS – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m an Interior Designer but I also do Home Staging & Home Organization. I specialize & I am known for Modern, unique designs- Although I’ve studied & know how to work with any genre of design- I specialize in Modern Spaces.
I am most proud of the “growth”, I’ve learned so much from every client & every project- even when there are mistakes. There’s not one project that I haven’t learned from, whether its the wrong paint color in specific lighting, to the best flooring for children & pets, to sometimes less is more in a room, to a better way to adhere something to doing something DIY on a small budget. From trials & tribulations- I’ve grown!
My husband says to me every year, “I’ve seen you grow & grow every year with more & more confidence.” I think doing what you love helps, but when you learn & continuously grow- that is something to be proud of. For my location, geographically- You don’t see a lot of modern, contemporary designs- which I love, that is what sets me apart from rest of the designers out there- less competition but what also sets me apart from others is my eye for “affordable” design.
I know a lot of interior designers that shop catalog & have custom designs. I do that ONLY when I’ve exhausted every option & simply can’t find what I’m looking for, but I have a knack for finding high-end design & quality beautiful items on a low scale. If I have to go to 10 stores in a day- I love the hunt for designer looking items that are affordable for everyone.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Well, when one thinks of success, they think of a big payout for a job well done OR their name in lights. 🙂 Don’t get me wrong, you want to be successful & get paid for your gift- but to me, that’s all that is, getting paid for a service.
To me, a true successful’s proud moment is when I see a client, on reveal day, walk into the room or home & start crying out of sheer joy! I mean, THAT is everything, THAT is when know you’ve done a great job, THAT is when you’ve succeeded. To see a client so overwhelmed with the end results- To me, that’s success! That’s my proud moment.
My criteria is knowing what the client wants- understanding, listening & knowing their wants & marrying that with their needs, hence creating a beautiful, comfortable space they love over & over again.
