Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark McDonough.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As someone who has spent the majority of their life in Dallas/Fort Worth, I’ve learned that I love it here and certainly have no plans to leave. I also knew that I wanted to be a part of a local-based business that provided a service and value to members of the community.
After graduating from SMU and spending many years at The Richards Group as a brand manager, the opportunity to work for a small local business seemed very exciting to me. My in-laws, David and Dana Winans, started the brokerage back in 1984 and had built it in to a very successful operation. David likes to joke about what a great salesman he is because he convinced me to give up working for brands like Patrón Tequila and SMU Athletics and jump head first into the wild world of real estate. For me though, it was a chance to be a part of something that had the potential to grow and develop into a top competitor in the Dallas/Fort Worth market place.
Since joining the brokerage in January of 2010 when the company had about 40 Realtors, we’ve been able to grow the company to over 130 agents and have been named a top 20 residential real estate company by the Dallas Business Journal for the last few years. We have no plans of slowing down either!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are going to be ups and downs in any business, but in a small business the ups are more exciting and the downs are more frightening. For us, we’ve been blessed to experience many more ups than downs! From tripling our size to becoming a top relocation brokerage in the Metroplex we’ve had a lot to celebrate.

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Winans is an independent, family-owned company with over 30 years of successful real estate service. Thanks to strong focuses on innovation and customer service, BHGRE Winans has become one of the premier real estate companies in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Our business model is very different from most brokerages in the Metroplex. Many companies make a large portion of their revenue by simply having agents join their brokerage and pay monthly fees. We charge agents $0 to be a part of our company and only generate income/revenue when our agents do.
I believe we are in the investment business. We invest in Realtors; spending the time, energy, and money it takes to develop successful sales people. Our return on the investment only comes when our agents’ businesses grow and thrive.
Another area of the business we specialize in is corporate relocation, which is to say that we are experts at moving people into and out of the metroplex. With over 130 different agents all over Dallas/Fort Worth we have detailed knowledge about almost every community and hidden gem there is to find. All of our relocation agents have been trained, certified and background checked so they can work with Fortune 100 companies, the US government, and members of our military. We’re proud to play such a large role in the growth of DFW.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’re looking forward to continued growth and success for our agents. We don’t rest or become complacent with the status quo. The reason we built our business model to be one where we only generate revenue when our agents are successful is so that we would always be motivated to help them do more and make more.
While currently a top 20 brokerages, we plan to be a top 5 residential real estate company in the near future.
