Meet Mark Shoemaker of Revive Counseling in Plano and Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Shoemaker.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mark. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always known that I had a heart for helping others. It wasn’t until I began pursuing my undergraduate degree that I discovered how important relationships were though. I had a big group of people that I spent time with every week through a church group. We laughed and cried together. There were times when we disagreed and times when we were full agreement, but regardless we were there to listen and care for one another. Through the relationships that were built, and the life change that happened to me during that time, I discovered that the best way I could help others was to encourage and support them through relationships. I had already been studying psychology, but it became clear that I would go on to pursue a Master’s degree in counseling to become a therapist. Since then, I have been perfecting the way I can use the therapeutic relationship to help people connect with others, be satisfied with themselves, and find fulfillment.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My journey to becoming a counselor has challenged me in the most difficult, but rewarding ways. In order to be the most effective therapist, I realized that I needed to the one on the couch being counseled. That way I could better empathize with my clients and the healing process. I faced shame, insecurity, and a past full of hurt. It was incredibly difficult, but it was also the most rewarding process I have been through. I feel the most content and fulfilled that I ever have, and a big part of that has to do with the counseling process I went through myself.

Revive Counseling – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Revive counseling offers counseling for Individuals and Couples. We specialize in helping people struggling with anger management, depression, anxiety and couples concerns whether that be divorce, intimacy issues, communication concerns, or infidelity. I have been featured as an expert on Bustle, Marriage.com, and Thriveworks.

A big part of what we do is helping stuck over thinkers. What we see often is people over-analyzing situations and interactions that keep them stuck feeling anxious, depressed, or having couples issues. We are dedicated to helping people slow down and connect the dots instead of staying stuck, spinning their wheels.

We are most proud of the quality care we provide for our clients. We are committed to helping our clients through whatever they are going through. If that means we need to refer and get them connected with someone else, then we will. If that means meeting for multiple hours during the week, then we will make time for that. We will do whatever we can, within our power, to help our clients meet their goals and find healing.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Any time I get positive feedback from my clients about how they have been, after we have stopped the counseling process, I feel incredibly proud. Some of the most joyful moments I have come from hearing from old clients tell me how well they are doing. That is why I do what I do. I want people to experience a transformation, just as I did.
