Meet Matthew G. of Imi Ola (To Seek Life)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew G.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Being creative in any way has been an instinct for me in anything I’m doing. Whether it’s from fixing or making something out of nothing. I picked up a camera when I was in middle school. It was a GoPro 4. My friends and I were always outside being young travelers. As soon as I figured out what editing software can do to my clips I took complete control of being a creator. Since then filming has been my passion; being able to put together memories and put it out the way you want was epic for me. My brand ‘Imi Ola’ (in Hawaiian) means ‘To Seek Life’. The sayings meant a lot to me since I couldn’t speak.

So I thought why not try and do something with it and make it an impact as well as a movement. I’ve kept my head high and just try to do the best I can in whatever ideas I have. At the end of the day, it’s yourself who is writing your story. So why not test your limits and see what you capable of. My biggest fear is that someday I’ll look back on my life and wish I didn’t want it. I’ve learned that tomorrow isn’t promised and when life’s over there’s no reset button. It’s ok to take risk, it’s ok to mess up and it’s ok to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Adversity has been a huge thing in my life. Freshmen year of high school my girlfriend had passed away from a car wreck and I didn’t know how to handle it, especially being at such a young age. It was very hard to understand life and the way it worked. After the tragedy, I was definitely not handling it well and lost track of my self in other activities. I quickly realized and had to notice my self-worth and do more. Going into my senior year, my mom had met a guy and he was no doubt the most selfless, most caring, humble gentlemen. I could tell it was pure love and happiness when around those two.

But going into that year, he passed from a heart attack. Seeing my mom like that hits your heart. The family was just not on track. Being the oldest of two younger sibling, I had to step up and become more of a human. Besides the fact I had lost two great people at a young age, I am very grateful to have met and experience time with two beautiful people. The impact of both of them is incredible. There are a lot of struggles along this path but these two moments were my most life-changing. To me having to experience things like that, young, really changes your mindset and makes me want to be more and carry on the legacy they both left And hopefully help spread the mindset around the world.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a filmmaker, I try my best to capture time we can’t get back. A picture can mean a thousand words but that makes me wonder how much a video can mean. What I love about creating is telling a story through your camera and putting it together any way you want. You’re in complete control. I don’t just film and then put clips together, I film and try to make art. I want people know how amazing life is through a camera. I’m most proud of how many others are impacted by my work and want more of it. When I get messages about how unique my videos are, that’s what drives me and that’s my ‘why’ for what I do.

What were you like growing up?
As a kid, it’s been a must to have an insane work ethic and I always found my self doing the opposite of others, that carries with me till this day. Solitude enhances my creativity. Solitude frees my mind up from all the distractions of everyday life and allows it to focus more fully on one thing. It allows my brain to think outside the box and to come up with unique, extraordinary solutions to ordinary problems. Spending time alone can give me a chance to ensure there’s a purpose to all of my hustling and adversity. Quiet space provides an opportunity to think about my goals, progress, and changes I want to make in my life. Being alone helps me become more comfortable in my own skin.
