Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Maenius.
Meg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I felt like for years I had the most “normal” life. Great family, amazing friends, an easy career, etc. At 26 years old, I married the man of my dreams and we began our life together. I moved out to Denver to join him, and about a year after that we decided it was time for us to start a family. I was comfortable in my job in retail and we felt our lifestyle was stable and ready to continue. At my 18 week appointment, to find out the gender of the baby, they couldn’t find a heartbeat. My world, our world, was rocked. When you think you have it all together – it only takes one significant event to make you really look at what you want in life. While growing up, I always had an affinity for hair and makeup, so, at 28 years old, I quit my job and started up in cosmetology school. My husband fully supported my dream and I knew – this was what I was supposed to do with my time here. About four months into this journey, I had a very scary incident. My upper left side of my body went completely numb. I couldn’t feel my hand, my arm, even parts of my face. I was misdiagnosed for about a year until our family encouraged us for a second opinion. It was then I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I was so close to finishing cosmetology school and at this point, had about 99% of my feeling back in my body, so I knew I had to continue working toward my goals. Weeks after I had my diagnosis of MS, another doctor had some news.
They found that I had Medullary Thyroid Cancer, an incurable, untreatable, disease in my throat. I began to question what path God had for me and my husband. Why was this happening? I hadn’t even turned 30 yet, and I was living with these diseases that have unforeseen paths in front of them. I had a burning passion for a career in the beauty industry. I knew that there were other women out there that would be going through trials in life significantly more difficult than anything I had ever been through, and I wanted to help them feel better. Whether that meant laughing and crying together, or just sitting in silence while they had a brief moment to themselves, I knew I was meant to share my story with others and they were meant to share theirs with me. I graduated cosmetology school two months early, and months later, my husband and I moved back to Texas to be near our family. Within a year of our return, my business had Exploded. I am booking our months in advance, educating other stylists, and building my brand. Some people attribute it to social media, some attribute it to talent, luck, etc. I attribute it to connections.
The connections I have with the people that sit in my chair. We share stories about struggle, about joy and meaningless moments in between. My husband told me once that luck is where preparation and opportunity meet. God has been preparing me my entire life to do what I love, and the gift He gave me and presented the opportunity for me to share my experiences with others. I am so lucky to have those moments. I get more joy out of helping women bring their inner beauty to the surface than anything else I’ve ever experienced. I work at an incredible salon with women who support and love one another. We are all so grateful that we get to do what we love, every..single..day. I have so many goals on the horizon that I know I’m going to achieve. Hair is my passion that sets my soul on fire. I can’t express my gratitude for being able to do what I love so deeply. None of us know how much time we have on this planet, so we have to find meaningful ways to spend it. I have the best family and friends in the world, and my husband is the greatest gift I’ve ever received.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! I wouldn’t call it a smooth road. Definitely a winding and bumpy one. However, I would fall asleep at the wheel if it were any other way. I’m constantly praying for healing and understanding, but I also know that both of those things may never come. There is always potential that my health could cause me to have to step away from my career. That really scares me, so I know I have to hustle and do what I love until my hands give out.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Textured By Meg – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
About 2 years ago, I became a small business owner and started my career as an independent stylist. I specialize in textured, lived in, low maintenance hair. Meaning, if you want to spend less of your time in the salon and more of it actually wearing your beautiful hair out in your life, I’m your girl! I am most proud of the growth that I have seen in my clientele. I set goals to hit by five years of being a business owner, and I hit them in 1. I am constantly attending educational courses for new techniques, perfecting current ones, and staying on trend. I started educating other stylists on Hand Tied Halo Extensions, and have become a specialist in that area as well. I also have a love for bridal hair and makeup. Basically, anything beauty!!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now, I am so happy with my growing business behind the chair. However, I know someday I want to expand my brand. I have ambitions of creating a product and accessory line and owning my own space. Whether that means space for educating other stylists or a home for other stylists to create magic in, I just know I’m meant to lead others in this industry.
