Meet Megan Rodriguez of Sweet February Cupcakes in San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Rodriguez.

Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Some of my most favorite memories begin in the kitchen!! My mom and grandmother taught me how to make things just a little sweeter when it came to desserts. I have always enjoyed baking and out of all the desserts I have made, I discovered that cupcakes bring the most joy. I began dabbling in cupcakes about four years ago and I was interested in creating unique and fun flavors that would bring excitement and enjoyment. I wanted my cupcakes to stand out and I wanted to share my love through my cupcakes to people. This led me to launch Sweet February Cupcakes in April of 2016. I wanted the name of my cupcake business to be different and special so I named it after the month, my husband and I were married and we all know that cupcakes are the sweetest so Sweet February Cupcakes was born. Once I put a name to my business, I knew I was committed to spreading love one cupcake at a time!!!

I am a teacher by day but you will find me in my kitchen, experimenting mixing, piping and throwing sprinkles!! The last two years we have been blessed to a part of some really amazing markets and festivals. We have had so many opportunities to get our name out there for people to see. We have met amazing people and have a dedicated and supportive following. The hustle is real but if you absolutely love what you do and you see that it brings others happiness, then it is all worth it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Heavens no. I have had to truly learn to manage my spending with my side business. When we first began this journey, I was purchasing way too many “cute” products just so my cupcakes looked extra adorable. But I was losing money and let’s be honest, people just want to eat the cupcake and not spend so much time taking out cute toppers or unwrapping the colorful wrappers just to get to the wrapper that they were baked in!! All of that needed to go or at least be saved for special occasions such as weddings. The truth is: I had to learn how to buy my products and manage my funds in order to actually make a profit. The first year of business we lost money and Sweet February was in the red. At that point, it was easier for us to say forget it Sweet February is closed but instead, we went into year two and three with more experience and some different business approaches. Having a business or a side hustle isn’t easy. It takes dedication and time. It takes patience and hard work. It takes long nights and creativity to do what we have to do!!!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sweet February Cupcakes was launched in 2016 and we create homemade gourmet cupcakes from the comfort of our sweet country kitchen!! We bake our cupcakes in our very own kitchen but we hope that one day, we can have our very own brick and mortar. We are known for our unique and different flavors as well as our boozy menu which includes a pipette shot of something a little… boozy. We are known for our signature flavors such as Sweet Dark Chocolate, Pumpkin Pie, Bourbon Maple Bacon, and Cinnamon Tres Leche. We have our seasonal flavors and of course, our signature flavors are always available!!!

I am most proud of the friendships we have made since beginning this journey! But what really makes me proud is the look on the customer’s faces when they sink their teeth into our cupcakes!!! It makes us so happy that people enjoy our product. It’s a special feeling when we work a market and a customer says “we only came to get your cupcakes.” That right there lets us know that our hard work is worth it all.

What were you like growing up?
Hmmm… well, I was the only child so the world was mine!!! I was blessed with a mom and dad who loved me and inspired me. I walked around in my mom’s high heels which were eventually exchanged for softball cleats. I loved playing sports and I wanted to be a good ball player just like my dad was. I even had the same jersey number as he did just because I loved him so much. I knew that one day, I could be an amazing mom just like my mom was and still is. I was a bit bossy and sassy and I had to learn how to share care and play fair!! I didn’t have to grow up fast. I learned many lessons, made life long friends and made mistakes but I had the privilege to live my best life and I was told I could do anything I wanted to as long as I kept God first, got a good education and put my best foot forward!!
