Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Commender.
Meredith, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Significant Events 10 years ago after spending 7 years as a high school English teacher. I had done some event planning in college and planned my own wedding in 2004, but that was the extent of my event planning experience at that point. The business was originally created in order for me to be a stay-at-home mom and just coordinate some events on the side. However, it quickly became necessary for it to become a full time business (along with being a full time mom!). It has continued to grow over the years, and we now do an average of 50 events a year including weddings, corporate events, social events, and charitable events. We also offer invitation and graphic design, and Meredith now speaks nationally on event industry topics.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I have had to learn how to balance coordinating a large quantity of events each year while still planning and designing them to the highest quality. I have also had my two children (Brendan, 9 and Kendall, 7) while running this business and took care of them full-time. Managing being an event planner, a wife, a mom, and a person requires a tremendous amount of time and stress management and brings with it physical and emotional exhaustion. It has been worth all of the challenges, but the challenges have been constant.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Significant Events of Texas – what should we know?
Significant Events coordinates and designs weddings, corporate events, charitable events, and social events for a wide range of clients, budgets, styles, and cultures. We specialize in making the most of every dollar the client is spending and in finding ways to help them maximize their budgets without sacrificing quality. We design each event to be a unique reflection of each client’s story and preferences. We are a group of smart, hardworking, creative, and straightforward women who always have our clients’ best interests at heart and who strive for excellence on every event.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I wish I could say that I have had many mentors along the way, but I have always been kind of a lone wolf when it comes to work. I lost both of my parents prior to opening this business and have always had to rely solely on myself when it comes to achieving my goals. However, my husband Eddie has been a strong supporter of my business and especially helpful with taking care of our family. I could not manage everything without him. My dear friend and colleague Glenn Roush, owner of Dallas based LeForce Entertainment, deserves a lot of credit too for always being willing to discuss business plans and best practices with me as we grew our businesses concurrently.
Elizabeth Butler, Kristin Cole, Sarah Hanlon, and Rachel Vansell, the other Significant Events’ Event Planners have also been essential in our growth: They are excellent planners and wonderful ambassadors of our brand and have helped the business to grow beyond just my event planning skills.
