Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Clayton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Micah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started working in real estate with a custom homebuilder in the East Dallas area. Working for a small homebuilder allowed me to wear multiple hats, and the sales hat was the one that I put on the quickest. I loved everything about it: the home-building process, the logistics of how so many moving parts must work together seamlessly, helping buyers find and create their home and most importantly, the look on their faces once they knew it was perfect. A few years later, I transitioned into a role working for a real estate developer in North Texas. This role allowed me to learn about the development side of real estate. I enjoyed this opportunity as well; however, I was missing out on the joy of helping families find their home.
So, shortly after, the decision was an easy one to make as I decided to venture off as a Real Estate Agent on my own. During my time in the industry, I had the opportunity to meet several top producing agents and teams across DFW. I quickly decided to join the number one Keller Williams team in the region, The Christie Cannon Team, as a Buyer Specialist. I knew joining a team was a no-brainer as I wanted the camaraderie and knowledge working with other agents provides. I also knew starting my own business would require significant accountability, and working with top-producing agents in the region would be of great benefit in that area of my development.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sure, the job brings obvious obstacles such as managing client emotions and expectations along with an unpredictable market; however, the biggest obstacle I face is managing my work-life balance and time management. This business is full of endless opportunities, and it can easily turn you into a workaholic to the extreme. I have such empathy for my clients that when they need me or have questions, my reaction is to answer immediately. I found out the hard way that not setting boundaries and expectations early on with my client relationships often led to late-night phone calls, working at the office well past dinner time and on Sundays during church. My husband pointed out that while he’s proud of my hard work that it’s not worth losing precious time with family, friends and my faith. I slowly began informing clients that while I’m always available, I do have hours set aside for my family and faith time as well.
Sure enough, every single client has appreciated and respected my decision. I now use a phrase I learned from a colleague, “I don’t work before coffee or negotiate after wine.” Which while humorous and always garners a laugh, is very true. The funny thing is, once I started setting boundaries, scheduling meetings that fit into my schedule and refused to work during church hours, my business began to soar and I was not near as stressed at the end of the night. I think all entrepreneurs will agree that work-life balance is a daily struggle and that you must identify your priorities and set boundaries where needed.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Christie Cannon Team – what should we know?
I’m a daydreamer and night thinker and find that once I dedicate myself to a project, I give it my all. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. My competitive nature and negotiating skills typically seem to surface during this process and are a big reason why I’m a member of the #1 Keller Williams team in the region, top 100 in the U.S. – The Christie Cannon Team.
Everything I do for my clients is calculated and done with intention. I’m here to change the game of real estate one client at a time and provide an experience that speaks louder than my words ever could.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Grit.
