Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Hancock.
Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My blogging journey started seven years ago. I discovered I loved writing blogs as part of my wedding planning business more than I enjoyed event planning. That transformed into a personal blog named Mind of Meesh where I shared personal stories about our family. I was shocked to learn that there were some bloggers who were making decent incomes blogging. At that time of my life, I had a strong desire to work from home and be with my daughter more but it wasn’t easy. I had a great full-time job as a marketing professional with an amazing income. I rebranded my blog into Modern Mom Life, worked late nights and weekends while juggling motherhood and work. I finally jumped, quit my corporate job and started a social media consulting firm alongside my blog. It wasn’t easy, but it sure was worth it. Today, I lead two online businesses, manage a family of five and somehow manage to keep my head on straight.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are definite highs and lows in entrepreneurship. When things are good, they are great! Everything feels amazing and you are ready to take on the world. However, sometimes during slow peaks or times of uncertainty, doubt and insecurities like to appear. I try to remember to always look how far I have come and to give myself some grace. My hardest challenge is being able to balance work, family, my faith and friends. It’s almost impossible to give 100% to all of these areas. There are never enough hours in the world of a business owner. I try to make lists and prioritize tasks while remember what is important to my core goals and values.
Modern Mom Life – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I own two online businesses, Modern Mom Life and The Social Scribe. I consider them my children as well. They complement each other nicely yet have different goals. Modern Mom Life is a parenting lifestyle blog. I share hacks that make parenting less chaotic and more fun. The Social Scribe is a digital marketing consulting business. Through this business I am able to share what I have learned through blogging and social media to fellow bloggers, business owners and the community. I manage social media for a few clients, consult and provide training through classes. I believe my passion and love for my craft is what sets me apart from others. Social media marketing is ever changing and demanding. If I didn’t love it, I don’t think I would have stayed the course with it for other seven years.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is not entirely defined by a dollar amount or what type of house or car a person drives. Time after time it’s been proven that money and fame do not always equal happiness and fulfillment. Success to me means living the happy life I choose on my terms while being able to provide for my family. Does this role spark passion and satisfy my creative side? Do I get excited to work on a project? Am I growing and learning new things? Am I giving back to others? Does my career motivate me to meet others who are doing amazing things? Am I happy? If the answer is “Yes” to those questions then I define that as successful.
