Meet Monika Heaton of Decision Financial Services in Colleyville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monika Heaton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Monika. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While being out on maternity leave, my dotcom went dot bomb and I found myself as a single mother with no job. I didn’t want to go back to corporate America as I wanted to be able to be home and raise my daughter. I asked my mom if she would move in with us and help me raise my daughter while I started my own business. That is how Decision Financial Services got started.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road, but I definitely hit a few speed bumps along the way. My first year in business I earned about $600. I supported my family on credit cards. Many nights I prayed asking if I was making the right decision for my family. I remember a conversation with a friend who asked if I could go work at McDonalds if I needed to. I looked at her as if she was insulting me. It was at that point I realized I was the problem with my success. Once I changed my outlook towards business, my practice grew. Then about 9 years ago, my mother got very sick and I found myself in the “sandwich generation”, taking care of a sick mother and raising a daughter that was in middle school. I stopped focusing on my practice and took care of my mom. It was very demanding physically, emotionally, and spiritually. My mom passed away over 4 years ago and not a day goes by that I regret not making her a priority. It was going through that, I believe, that makes me the business owner I am today.

Decision Financial Services – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an Enrolled Agent that specializes in year-round tax planning and preparation. My area of expertise is in medical, real estate, and growing businesses; helping them structure their businesses towards growth. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t view my clients as another tax return. I listen to their needs and we work together to help them structure their businesses so that it benefits them and their family.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is having the opportunity to provide for my family. To make sure that my daughter knows that she can do anything she sets her mind to and that I have her back all the way.
