Meet Morenike Oshin of Visual Lush in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morenike Oshin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Morenike. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey started really young. When I was a kid, I used to “outfit daydream” I would put all sorts of outfits together and made such an event of it when I was going to church or family events. After taking a home economics class and learning how to sew and make jewelry, my imagination of what I could create ran wild. I had a sketchbook of ideas that I wrote randomly when an idea came in mind. I was the kid that pressured their mom to buy lots of starter kits so I could make all sorts of things like sewing, jewelry, beaded purses… I would use the items I made as either gifts for my friends or sell them in school. I became a little business women at 11.

When I moved to the United States at age 14, this all ended. I focused on school, having consistent reconstructive surgeries and adapting to living in a new environment. On and off for a few years, I would dabble in and out of my craft. Sewing, making jewelry and styling behind the scenes for fashion shows. Once I headed to college, I had a very tough major in medicine and because of this, I could not really focus on this passion I had for creating. I found an outlet though, I used myself and my sorority sisters as guinea pigs. I gave styling tips to them and would let them borrow my clothes and shoes!

Throughout this time of wandering, my friends consistently told me to start a blog, I declined because I did not have the time. Finally, I caved, did some research by following some bloggers and watching youtube videos. I started a blog called biolas collection, worked on it on and off. Instead of medical school, I decided to start a career in fashion as a visual merchandiser. With a lot of doubt, mistakes, and encouragement from my friends, I continue. I changed the name of my blog to visual lush a few years back to reflect how I see my fashion in my life, it’s colorful.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been tough. I struggle with keeping myself motivated and not giving up. I constantly do battle with my self-doubt. I try not to get lost in the shuffle of “fitting in” Because as my marathon continues, I want to make sure that my path in life makes an impact.

Please tell us about Visual Lush.
Visual Lush is a Life and Style blog. I walk you through the journey of discovering myself as I am trying to become a confident woman who leads an impactful life through fashion and serving others. Sharing how my life continues to be transformed from when I was burned in a gas explosion in Nigeria, to how I interpret fashion today from my native home country and what I read in magazines and social media. I share with you, global fashion trends through my eyes.

What sets me apart from others is that I intentionally use what I post to uplift people and I use the vehicle of fashion to get it across.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I turned 7 years old 22 days after the accident. We could not leave to celebrate so my parents had a party for me and everyone in the hospital ward. This was the best birthday I have ever had because even though there was a lot of pain around me, my parents still took the time to celebrate me and uplift the hospital ward.
