Meet MP Ricky

Today we’d like to introduce you to MP Ricky.

Hi MP, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started making my solo music about 3 years ago. I have a lot of inspirations across different genres like metal and rap. My interest in music started when I was very little listening to what my dad listened to, usually 70s and 80s rock. Coming from a Mexican family I also listened to what my mom listened to, usually Banda music and Cumbia. I first started actually making music right after I graduated high school playing bass in a metal band. I had no bass background so my bandmates would teach me a lot of stuff. That lasted a few months until we disbanded. I still had the drive to make music and I was always into rap and listening to underground artists. A friend of mine from back in my high school days was a music engineer and really helped me get my footing into my solo career. Ironically his name is Ricky as well. I’ve been perfecting my sound ever since. I’ll be honest in saying when I first started doing my solo music, I wasn’t too good at it but over time I started to find my sound and it became easier to have fun and make good music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles I’ve faced is making music that appeals to everyone. Now after doing music for some time, I make music that I personally like and would listen to on my own time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a musician. I mainly make rap music but I don’t like putting myself in a box as a “rapper”. What sets me apart from others is I love to experiment with different sounds like acoustics and different melodies. I love making melodic music that can get stuck in people’s heads.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Get out of your comfort zone and interact with others who do the same thing as you. Don’t be afraid to get out of your box. Doing shows and attending events is a great way to network.
