Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Cosmic.
Nick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been interested in shooting photos since the mid 90’s when my parents took me on road trips to see national parks. And while I’d like to say that it sparked my imagination then, it took about 20 years of other hobbies coming and going for me to realize my love for capturing the subtleties of human emotion and the beauty in our world through photography. I started shooting regularly in 2015 but didn’t share much of my work until 2019 because I was quite intimidated by sharing something so personal. To my complete shock, my photos began to garner some notice and I’ve been creating with some awesome people for the past year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle along the way has been getting over my fear of sharing my work. It took me four years of making photos to feel like I was comfortable enough to let other people see them.
Please tell us about your work.
Anytime someone asks me what type of photography I do, I tell them that I’m an “urban lifestyle photographer” because I really don’t want to pick just one lane to stay in. Most often I’m shooting portraiture that fits under the style of “street photography” (which in itself is incredibly broad), but I also shoot weddings, commercial, architecture, and concerts. I think what sets my work apart from others is something that happens before the shoot even begins: I meet every client that I shoot with for coffee so that we can get to know one another. I think the best work happens when there’s trust and I do my best to build a relationship that makes that possible.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m honestly just looking forward to making more photos that bring people joy. As far as future plans go, I’m always self-assessing to make sure that what I believe is most important stays in focus, but keeping a small amount of bookings available per month gives me room to breathe and create new avenues for my work to bring value to people. All of this year’s potential is still too early to talk about, but I have some ideas that I’m really excited about.
