Meet Nick Utter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Utter.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a freelance Cinematographer from Fort Worth, Texas.
I grew up running around the house with a camera in my hands.
While attending TCU, I worked for the Athletic Marketing Department, creating content for Social Media/Jumbotrons/Posters/etc.
In 2010, I graduated from TCU with a degree in Film-Television-Digital Media, and a minor in Business. I have been freelancing in the industry for 8+ years as a cinematographer/filmmaker on brand-films, commercials, music videos, and corporate media.

I love working with a talented crew to bring a vision to life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest struggle has been to stay driven and keep grinding. Freelancing is a dangerous drug. It can offer you endless growth, freedom, schedule flexibility and much more, however with that there comes a looming cloud that always seems to follow you. You ask yourself, should I be doing more? I find that no matter how busy you get, you are always thinking about the next project, the next job, the next year.  This drive keeps propelling me forward helping to avoid complacency.

What do you do? What do you specialize in?
I’m a freelance Director of Photography.
I work with Directors/Advertising Agencies/Schools/Businesses to bring their visuals to life.
I’m a bit of a gear head, so I love new cameras, lenses, dollies, tripods, monitors, lighting, etc. Everything can be used as a tool to craft the image for camera.

When I first started freelancing, I did a lot of sports production. In sports, I learned sometimes you have to find the frame. You don’t have the luxury of setting up each and every shot, so you have to be quick to find the shot. I feel like this helped me move quickly on set, and find creative solutions for our images.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory has nothing to do with filmmaking. We actually used to drive up to Lake City Colorado every summer and ride motorcycles through the mountains. Being out there on your own, fully in control of your bike on the side of a mountain is something that I’ll never forget the feeling of.
