Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Binion.
Nicole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Oh my, where can I start? I guess I can say that I was always a creative soul with a love for hair. I remember growing up, my mom kept us in the salon every 2 weeks so it was literally apart of life structure for me. But trust and believe when I wasn’t in the salon, in those between times, I was trying my best to duplicate any style that I thought was fly. I clearly remember putting peroxide on my hair because I wanted color and I knew I couldn’t get any at that age but how could you get in trouble if the sun tinted your hair? It was pure wit.
From an adolescent and pre-teen to a full blown teenager I knew how to do everything but properly work a marcel iron, and that’s where my little sister came into play. This was the pivotal moment that I learn about “tempering” an iron! It was the most frightening thing in life for me. I Spritz’d her hair, I clamped it with the crimping iron and voila, at that very moment I had learned what a “pocket curl” was! The damn iron was too hot. I cried and before my career had even began it ended. At least I thought so! Like a trooper my sister assured me that it was only hair and that it would grow back. I dried my eyes and kept on pushing.
Fast forward to college where I only attended because folks said that you couldn’t make a good living doing hair! Funny, I spent half of my life as I knew it in the salon, so we had to be paying somebodies bills. I literally did hair while I was in college to past the time! It was a way for me to earn some cash doing what I was good at while spending time with my home girls and having fun. It was amazing. Not to mention the additional pleasure of seeing them feeling good about themselves because they know that they look good. I knew what my calling was! Once returning from College I was blessed to have met a man that saw that quality in me and pushed me to go to school to begin a career doing what I found joy in. I did just that!
Now, I am not only a licensed Cosmetologist but I’m also a licensed Instructor and continuing Education Sponsor. Along my journey I was fortunate to have met some wonderful women who have poured into me and helped me to grow into the successful stylist that I am today. I was lucky to have experienced owning my own salon with a dynamic team and given the chance to relocate and start a new journey here in Texas doing what I do best and love the most. I was able to bring my style and flare from Illinois and I’ve been able service some of the best and most beautiful women in the metroplex. They keep me laughing and I keep them shinning and uplifted like the stars that they are. I love that I get the opportunity to empower women and bring out the confidence that could move mountains.
We all have a purpose and have all been given powers. I believe that my power lies in my creative ability to make women see themselves as they only dreamt they could achieve. In my abilities I have been given the power to encourage women to affirm themselves. I provide more than just haircare. I give each client an experience that allows them to escape from whatever troubles may have been on their hearts and minds for about 2 hours and only focus on them. A moment to be carefree. We laugh, we cry, we even get ratchet but each visit is a memorable one. Time shared where I’m touching just as many hearts as I am heads.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely NOT! If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. One of my biggest challenges was and sometimes still is believing in myself. I find it so easy to encourage others but I often ask who encourages the person who encourages everyone else. Moving and starting over was a big step. I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t even know if they would like what I had to offer. I specialize in short hair and in a market where weave is a huge deal I had to stand on what I believed, and have faith that God would not equip me with a gift that there was no room for. I have to constantly remind myself that there is no lack. There is room at the top for everyone.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Although there is no place like home, Chi-town, I would say that DFW is an amazing place for the beauty industry with plenty of room for growth and opportunity. There are a multifacit of ways that you could dominate in this industry. It definitely is what you make it and if you don’t think so this business just may not be for you. For someone who maybe just be starting out and getting their feet wet in this industry I would encourage them to be willing to learn, be consistent, find your niche and get rich in your niche. Once you establish your niche you can map out your best plan of attack!
