Meet Nita Henry of Neat Locs in Lewisville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nita Henry.

Nita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hi! I am so grateful for this opportunity to tell you a little bit about me and how my business came to be. About five years ago, my son wanted Locs to wear to a Travis Scott concert and to Sr. prom that week. He found a stylist in a suite at the mall next to us and got his Locs started. He was happy with the work and so was I.

It was short-lived though, as the Locs began to unravel within 24-hours. Well, he called the stylist right in front of me and politely let her know that a few Locs, not all, were unraveling and asked if she could tighten them. The “stylist” responded in a rude and unexpected manner, telling my son that it would be another $80 to revisit her unstable work.

I told my son to just let it go and to think of an alternate style for his hair. I thought that would be the end of it, but nope, not so. My son was determined to have Locs for his upcoming events. I had never seen him this passionate about his image or hair. He asked me to give it a try and said that he thinks I can do a better job at it. My kid believing in me was all it took to light my fire. I took a random go at it and he loved it!

My son wore his Locs to school the next day and by noon, five of his peers were calling me saying “Ms. Nita, my parents said that I can have Locs if you do them because they look so nice and neat”. I wanted to make sure they all could attend the events to come with Locs. So, after a long managerial day at a fortune 500, I came home and mustered up the energy to get all five heads done, finishing the last one at 1:30 am.

My son and friends proudly attended the concert and prom with hair that I styled for them. The fact that they proudly rocked my work and believed in my efforts encouraged me to build my social media pages and officially start my business. I’ve been bringing smiles to the faces of many in DFW and Tucson for five yrs. now. I absolutely love taking care of Locs and pampering my clients.

That stylist taught me what not to do, and through that sour experience, I demonstrated how to turn lemons into lemonade!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Initially, I didn’t possess styling skills and as my clients grew length they’d request a style, but I could not perform them. So they rocked with me and settled for a neat retwist.

I determined that I was going to grow with my business and started studying Loc style. I would also practice them on a mannequin head and once I felt confident enough, I was able to add it as a service. Now, my clients request it and I bring it to life. It’s a rewarding feeling to see the smiles on their faces when they see their style.
