Today we’d like to introduce you to Norma Soto.
Norma, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since I was a child, I was painting and drawing. I was learning from public school on how to use different media and how I can express my self through art.
It wasn’t till the age of 17 when I left school and quit my day time job to become who I want to be and focus on what I love the most. I sudden feeling in a chest made me realize I can be me as much as I can believe in me.
After a whole year of being a full-time artist, I can definitely see the change in my atmosphere and myself. I grew to be more independent and motivated. I felt once again, like a “chingona.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has definitely been bumpy. I’ve come across so many struggles that I wasn’t prepared for mentally.
One of the struggles I deal with as an artist is confidence in putting myself out there and breaking out of the nerves.
The first few months, there were times I was interviewed in front of a camera I would freeze up and not remember what I had planned to say. Anxiety then would start to build and in my own head, it would such a disastrous.
Eventually, I knew I had to break out the barrier I had between the world and my voice. I practice speech every day by talking to myself in the mirror or by going out in public events and finding that enthusiastic voice of mine.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I run a small clothing business called “Hostage”, I am the founder/artist/designer behind the brand.
I am genuinely happy and proud as a company that I am able to create with no limitations, Hostage expresses how your passion cannot be stopped. Your passion cannot be taken away from your hands. Your passion will somehow find its way back to your body and mind. You can’t escape the beauty of your art. It’s almost like your own creativity is keeping you “Hostage.”
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I became freer. More free spirit and happy!
I goof around a lot and that’s something that will stick around me considering that being funny and sarcastic is what makes me, ME!
I enjoy spending quality time to myself, being away from everything and just being around Gaia. It is so therapeutic to my own soul and my mind to be able to sit down on the green field, and just listen to my favorite tunes such as Covet, Cherry Mantis, Billie Eilish, and Toro Y Moi.
