Today we’d like to introduce you to Raul Sanchez.
Raul, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my journey with a small DSLR that I purchased from a pawn shop. I would go out daily and would take my camera everywhere and even though my pictures weren’t that good I never gave up and kept pushing forward. I purchased a few books on how to properly set my camera up and watched many youtube videos on how to get good compositions. I didn’t give up and slowly created an Instagram feed that I became proud of.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been many challenges and obstacles along the way especially with nobody to guide you and tell you how to do things correctly. Self doubt is another challenge that mostly everyone struggles with, but sometimes we just have to push through it all and eventually you begin to understand on how to do things your own way. Another challenge that I faced early on was not having any clients or people to work with because no one knew who I was or what I did, but all you need is one person to believe in you and to be willing to help with what you want to do.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I began as a street photographer just casually going out and capturing candid moments of people being themselves and not realizing that they had a camera in front of them. Then I moved into wedding photography and captured some of the most beautiful moments that I had experienced there was something about capturing candid moments that I really loved. Currently the thing that I am known for is my black and white photography and the way that I take my photos. I am very selective on the images that I choose to convert into black and white because it creates a feeling of time standing still at that very particular moment and I get to capture it on my camera.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success has never been about the money for me, although it is nice to be compensated for doing the things you love. Success for me means that people love my work and that they appreciate the way that I do things and how I express myself in my photos. I have met many like minded people who love to work with me and create amazing work by collaborating and throwing out ideas at each other. Being surrounded by people who love doing what I love to do is what success means to me. My biggest goal or marker at the moment is to capture that one single image that will go down in history as a beautiful piece of art.
