Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanjay Patel.
Sanjay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After dealing with stress working for corporate Company, I felt ready to own my own business. At that time, I just turned 50 so finding another job opportunity was not an option. I looked at several businesses however I felt that those businesses would create more stress as I’d have responsibility of potential staffing issues, theft, late nights/weekends and funds locked it to buy inventory and merchandise.
I thought long and hard and asked myself what do I really want that does not have those issues, I wanted a business that fits my needs because that is what will make me happy and bring out the best in me. After several brainstorming ideas, I found my perfect match, a print and ship type of business. I did not want a franchise as that would restrict me on what I wanted to do.
I found my perfect business, Copy & Ship HQ. The location is perfect as it captures four cities and in a growing area. The shop is easy to run on my own and we close on Sundays so I can spend quality time with family. I however had no previous in this type of business so it took me 6 months to understand the business fully.
I am now an expert with all packing and shipping needs and known as the local shipping and packing store.
My key formula is to give 110% customer service with fair pricing.
As an artist, I have turned half of the store into a gallery where I allow local artists to place their artwork on my wall.
I thoroughly enjoy what I do and I never think making money is a priority, as this comes automatically through high standards in customer service and reasonable pricing.
Has it been a smooth road?
Since I had never owned any businesses or had any clue about the shipping and packing business, yes, I panicked and the first 6 months the business was down by 20% and we were barely breaking even. There was a part time staff who I was looking to rely on once I took over, however within a week, she left due to personal reasons therefore, I had to learn on my own.
It took me 6 months to master the business. Next, I realigned some pricing which made sense and competitive. I cleaned every corner of the store and changed all the lights to LED to brighten it up and give it life. Customers immediately noticed the difference. Also since the walls are grey and dull I hung my paintings to give it some color.
Slowly I started to introduce and promote some lines, for example, Shredding, Banners and business card, these have been a big hit with the sales.
I also started a loyalty card scheme which the customers loved as they got a discount with almost every purchase. I’m currently reviewing other discount schemes.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a local mailing and packing store which provides services. Unlike FedEx and US, we are independent therefore we do it all, FedEx, UPS, USPS and DHL. The advantage of this is we can compare prices and services with each carrier and discuss the best option that fits customer’s needs.
In addition, we have over 150 different size boxes therefore we pack the items I a perfect box so the customers don’t overpay by using a larger box then needed.
We offer other services including Notary, Private mail box, Shredding, all forms of printing and to make the store unique I allow local artist to display their work at no cost. I encourage anyone who has create something to allow me to promote them.
The biggest accomplishment is our shredding business. The previous owners did not do any shredding, however I saw an opportunity. Last year we did 5800 LBS in shredding, we offer it at a very competitive price of 69c/LBS. Customers love this service.
Our customer service and friendly attitude is a winning formula. We treat each customer with respect and we try to aim 110% satisfaction.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, this city is a growing however to make this business work, you have to give great customer service, competitive pricing and something uniqueness so that customers talk about you.
