Meet Santiago Chavez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Santiago Chavez.

Santiago, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I ended up at a rave by accident one night, and that’s when I first fell in love with the idea of becoming a DJ. When I started hitting the club scene I was a hardcore breakdancer. A friend and I were out one night looking to get into some battles somewhere and we ended up at the Canyon Club inside the Bronco Bowl. Long story short, we stumbled into a rave. I knew about raves but had never been to one. At the time, I was already into all kinds of music and electronic music was one of my favorite genres. We decided to stick around and head to the stage to see who was djing. While we were there I saw DJ sets by Kid Icarus aka Jeremy Word, Dj Irene, and Dieselboy. I watched the way they rocked the crowd, I saw how they were able to make people dance and have a great time through music, and I knew I was hooked. That was the moment I decided I needed to be a DJ! Years and years later… here I am still doing what I love to do! I get to make people dance and have a good time, and for a short time, I’m able to help them forget about their troubles!

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all!  With anything, there are trials and tribulations and the biggest with djing is evolving with the times. Sure, I’ve made some questionable decisions in the past and maybe took a gig or two that didn’t make sense, but I learn and I’m continuing to learn. I always say you gotta play the game to be part of the game. That being said I’ve had to learn how to evolve and keep up with technology, the constant changing music formats that come in and out, and just being able to read different crowds. It’s a never-ending, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from the competition?
Well, my business is being a DJ, and what I feel like I am good at and pride myself is being able to play to any crowd and any style depending on what event I am playing at. I feel like being able to switch it up and being able to please the crowd and the bar at the same time is important. I would say what sets me apart from others is my experience. I have been in this game for a long time and certain things like reading a crowd and knowing it’s ok to clear a dance floor to get them to the bar and bring them back to the dance floor are just some things that you pick up over time.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the whole DJ/streaming growing and just becoming another major tool in the game. The future of “I don’t have that track” won’t exist anymore. It may get to the point where we don’t even have to download songs, but merely curate a playlist for different settings and events. Technology is crazy and I can’t wait to see where the digital world takes djing!
