Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Blazejewski.
Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I think the passion of photography really started the summer before freshman year in high school. I got my first point and shoot Canon camera from my family right before we took a trip up to Alaska! I can so distinctly remember taking a picture of a red boat surrounded by icebergs and I thought I hung the mood – I was good. I started taking candid pictures of my family that trip as well, but I was more interested in nature at first – I think I even started telling people I wanted to work for Nat Geo. Looking back now I could never, but it was fun to imagine!
Fast forward a few years later to my senior year of high school I interned for a local Dallas photographer. I was in the back of the studio the whole time, I never got to do more than adjusting the exposer in Lightroom and it wasn’t the best experience. I started to lose some interest in photography after that, but the photo class I took in school gave me a creative outlet.
I left Dallas for college and attended Auburn University. I pursued a degree in Finance, and that is also where photography came back into play. Everyone in the business school needed to have a LinkedIn account and that meant everyone needed a profile picture. I was a girl with a camera that knew how to photoshop blemishes – people would just come to me in pajama shorts and a blazer and we would get those done in five minutes. My name spread but nothing too much to handle. Throughout college I continued to take pictures on the side of classes. By junior year I think I was in pretty high demand. I moved on to graduation pictures, engagement portraits, and even weddings. I even worked for a local boutique taking their pictures and it was the best!
I graduated in 2018 from Auburn with a degree in finance and moved back to Dallas – I think I walked right off the stage to my car to drive back. I belong in Dallas, and I’m a full-time photographer here now!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been pretty smooth! My family has supported me the whole way which has helped a ton. If I didn’t have talent I don’t believe they would have encouraged and supported me this much! I think they would have let me down easy a long time ago.
I still worry if people will like their pictures and sometimes I deal with some rude people but I’m sure that happens in every path.
Please tell us more about your work.
I am a Dallas based lifestyle, wedding and event photographer. I specialize in natural light but I do know how to work a flash especially for weddings and events.
Since I’m just a one-man operation, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I never thought of myself as a super confident person but I think I have a confidence now without thinking too highly of myself that gives me a drive to always improve.
What sets me apart is how I direct those I photograph. I am naturally a funny person but I want to be taken seriously, so I combine those to connect with clients. I want to capture the personality rather than a pose.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Hands down #1 is my mom and dad, through anything in life they have always supported me and helped me. I’ve never questioned if they were proud of me, I know they are. Without them, I would actually be nowhere. They are the best of the best.
Secondly, i’ve been so lucky with my friends and their endless support. My friend from high school, Allison was my first “client”. When I had actually no experience they trusted me to photograph them. I’ve dragged them to random and questionable spots and they go along with it. They critique my work when it needs it, but never unfairly or make me feel bad about what I have done.
Lastly, my clients are the BEST. I know they ask me to photograph them for a reason and honestly, they are all so supportive – especially my senior girls. I am spoiled by my client’s support on a daily basis, it makes me know I’m on the right track. I genuinely wish I could put every name down.
