Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Harris.
Scott, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am Scott Harris and I make music under Scott Harris Regime. I got started in the industry about five years ago writing a bunch of music and sending out promos and never hearing back until my single ‘While The World Sleeps.’ That track changed the trajectory of my career a lot, I really learned about the industry than with the contracts and whatnot and since then, I have been pushing out music under my artist name and writing for other artists as well.
In my eyes, it has been a fun experience. I got in right when streaming started to become popular and the rise of dance music. I have been really fortunate to work with hard-working, humble artists that are able to see the vision. I really love working with Milk Music – they have done a number of top lines for me for certain tracks. Kris Kiss wrote the topline for ‘We Were Young’ in less than 48 hours which, for me, is insane. It felt like I had just clicked send in the email to him with the demo and then all of a sudden, I get this epic, lyric back form him.
My management team has introduced me to some incredible talent as well, artists that you can describe a sound and a second later, they are singing it out like ‘that’s too easy.’ I get really inspired by euphoric and uplifting melodies, all of my songs have an upbeat feel to them even if the lyrics don’t necessarily follow the same happiness. I am in a constant battle in the studio of going all out with certain elements and keeping the whole track simple.
I find a balance where if you are listening for it you can hear ‘oh this must have taken a minute to get this element to sound like this’ versus hearing the track and saying ‘yea this is a pretty simple melody and chord progression.’ I really appreciate the small things in the track that without you would notice but when it’s all mixed together just sound natural.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Challenges come up every day. What a lot of people don’t realize about artists is that it’s actually pretty similar to being an entrepreneur. You are essentially selling your art to people and wearing each cap that goes with that, so marketing, sales, creating art, networking, etc.. Navigating through all the business side of things and not getting lost in the woods can certainly be a challenge- but seeing people react to my music and smile or creating an awesome energy in a venue at a show makes it all worth it.
I really love hearing from fans that message me and tell me where they were in their life when they first heard one of my songs – sometimes it’s right after a breakup or right when they first met someone they are dating, that’s one of the coolest things that I get to see. I think initially, my biggest struggle was either not hearing back from labels or managers or hearing two very different opinions on feedback. I used to laugh at my friends that got told ‘no’ from a job. I would tell them, ‘hey at least you heard something and you can ask why and improve, I’m over here essentially talking to myself LOL.’ Then when I did hear back it was all over the board, one A&R might have said ‘decent track but the vocal is too loud’ only for the next to say ‘great track but we can’t hear the vocal’. There is a lot of finding zen in my day to day experience!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I have been producing upbeat dance music under my artist name for a few years now and writing for artists all over the world more within the last three years. I enjoy all types of music and nailing down the sound artists are trying to make. There is a lot of negativity that I see friends get caught up in and I just try to make music that someone could escape and get lost in. Under my artist name, I write a lot of high energy songs and try to find a vocalist that can bring passion and joy to the track.
I passed 15 million streams on Spotify last year which was, for me, INSANE. It’s one thing to make something and hopes at least one other person out there will like it or relate but to get the response I have gotten has been really humbling. I am really proud of my new single coming out February 28! I wrote ‘Still The Same’ over a few weeks. I was really going for that 2013 progressive house sound but brought into 2020. Avicii was a big influence on it, the piano in the chorus is very similar to his style but then I added some more modern sounding leads and electric sounds into it. I found this extremely talented vocalist on sound better and she hit all the right parts.
I have yet to work with a vocalist in the studio at the same time I am so there is always some back and forth but for this track, the first files she sent were perfect. I have played it for some friends and small venues in Dallas and for me the most important sign of a song is the head bop. It’s such a natural thing that people do without realizing – it’s an easy way to tell if the vibe of the track is working or if it could use a little more time in the studio. Of course after the first five seconds, the first thing people say is ‘Wow, this is great… Who is the vocalist?!?’, and then start bopping their head
What were you like growing up?
I was a bit of a nerd growing up and it has definitely stayed with me into adulthood. I played football and lacrosse, and you could usually find me at a friend’s house during the weekends. Once I got to college I really got into music production, during the week I would get all my school work done and work on music and on the weekend I would go see an artist that I looked up to play nearby. This kept me inspired and helped me refine my sound. I had a lot of support from friends starting out which certainly helped keep me going.
